On Saturday the Murcian regional health authority reported the lowest number of new infections since March, and a generalised fall in the overall incidence of more than 40 per cent in the last week, a continued fall in the rate of new infections mirrored by the latest Covid figures relating to Sunday 12, which were published on Monday.
Sunday figures are always lower than those reported on any other day of the week due to the fact that less staff are working and fewer tests are carried out, the result logically being a lower number of new cases diagnosed.
The Region of Murcia detected 16 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday, but only carried out 949 PCR tests, yielding a positivity rate of 1.68 per cent. This is lower than the 2.4 per cent of the results from Saturday and the 2.7 per cent of Friday.
This takes the number of active positives down to 1,139, which represents a decrease of 119 people with respect to the data on Saturday.
No deaths were reported on Sunday, as was the case on Saturday, so the death toll from the virus remains at 1,714.
This leaves 1,038 people in home isolation, which is a decrease of 119 compared to the previous day.
At close of play on Sunday the number of patients hospitalised was 101, with 23 in intensive care,
The Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño, stated during the press conference following the Covid Committee meeting that 80 per cent of the patients admitted to the intensive care unit are not vaccinated, and 70 per cent of those admitted to covid wards are not vaccinated.
Although the majority of the patients dying are elderly, the average age of patients in ICU is 51 and the age range of those hospitalised with more serious cases is 22 to 96.
The minister continues to emphasise the importance of getting vaccinated and explained that 95 per cent of the cases diagnosed in the Region are the delta variant.
