ARCHIVED - Covid-related deaths on the rise: Spain coronavirus update February 3
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The cumulative incidence rate in Spain has dropped by 21% in the past three weeks
In a week where most people in Spain are up in arms about the fact that the government has voted to extend mandatory mask-wearing in outdoor public places for the foreseeable future, the sixth wave of the pandemic is almost certainly losing its grip. The incidence rate has been consistently falling for the past three weeks, a period in which there has been a considerable reduction of 21%.
However, the decline of previous waves has resulted in an unfortunate rise in the number of fatalities, and this time around things are no different, as Covid-related deaths are quickly reaching their maximum peak even as infections and incidence decrease.
Cumulative incidence rate
On Wednesday February 2, the 14-day incidence plummeted a further 130 points to reach 2,564 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Furthermore, this figure has dropped in all regions and across all age ranges once again.
Andalucía stands out as the community overcoming the sixth wave at the fastest clip, now with a cumulative incidence of just 884 cases per 100,000 people. Catalonia is holding on to the top position with 4,397 infections, almost 700 points higher than its nearest rival, Murcia, which yesterday registered 3,728 cases.
Coming in third is the Valencian Community, with 3,719 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The age group with the highest incidence rate is those aged 11 and under, at 4,872.
Coronavirus infections
The autonomous communities have notified the Ministry of Health of 86,222 new Covid cases on Wednesday, a figure that is significantly lower than the 133,553 infections registered on the same day last week.
In the past two weeks, a total of 1,215,081 positives have been reported, which brings the overall number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 10,125,348.
Between January 23 and 29, 1,741,241 diagnostic tests were carried out, resulting in a positivity rate of 35.39%. This figure is very slowly decreasing, but it is still far above the 5% level at which the World Health Organisation (WHO) considers the spread of the virus ‘controlled.’
Hospitalisations and fatalities
The data on hospitalisations continues to be positive this week. There are currently 17,441 patients hospitalised for Covid throughout Spain (down from 18,087 yesterday) and 2,010 in the ICU (down from 2,054).
This means that 13.96% of hospital beds are occupied by coronavirus patients (14.52% yesterday) while the ICU occupancy rate has dropped slightly from 21.71% to 21.34% in the last 24 hours.
The death toll, sadly, is high and a further 224 fatalities were reported on Wednesday, compared to the 215 registered on the same day last week.
Over the past seven days, 799 people have lost their lives, bringing the overall death toll since the health crisis began to 93,857.
Vaccination data
As of February 2, a total of 38,305,091 people, representing 90.8% of the population over the age of 12, have been double jabbed while a further 39,115,096 (92.7%) have received their first dose
