Traditions, Fiestas and Culture in San Javier

San Javier has a rich cultural heritage reflecting its evolution as a town, celebrating several festivals, fiestas and cultural events throughout the year.

Many of the events are linked to the religious calendar,Fiestas centred around San Blas, the Virgen del Carmen and Santiago Apóstol.

Romerias

The Romeria of San Blas takes place on the 3rd February each year and is the only non maritime Romeria in the Mar Menor, which to put it simply means that it is in the only Romeria in which the figure of a Saint/ Virgin is carried manually through the streets rather than by sea.

Virgen del Carmen

The Virgen del Carmen is the patron of fishermen, and protects them from harm whilst at sea. On the 16th July, she is carried in marine Romería out to sea by the fishermen of the town, and flowers are thrown into the water to honour those who died at sea.

The San Javier Jazz Festival and Musicas del Alma

The famous summer Jazz Festival draws top International acts for great open air Jazz in the warm air of an August evening.During the winter, Musicas del alma keeps the faithful content, anticipating the summer, although in 2012 the winter programme has been postponed due to budgetary restrictions. The summer festival of 2012 is also facing a reduction in subsidies..
