article_detailDate Published: 12/01/2021ARCHIVED ARTICLEARCHIVED - Driver travelled 13 kilometres against the traffic on RM-3 before collision in Mazarrón
The man was drunk at the time
The Guardia Civíl of the Region of Murcia has finished compiling its report about an accident on the RM-3 within the municipality of Mazarrón, involving the drunken driver of a vehicle that was detected travelling the wrong way up the carriageway and only stopped when it collided head-on with a vehicle travelling on the carriageway in the right direction.
The events took place during the evening of last Thursday, January 7th, when Traffic police were alerted that a motorist on the RM-3 connecting Totana with Mazarrón was travelling up the carriageway towards oncoming traffic.
A patrol from the Traffic Sector was immediately mobilized, but by the time they reached the location the vehicle had already covered 13km and collided head-on with another vehicle driven by a woman who was seriously injured.
The driver who had caused the accident was unharmed, but both vehicles suffered considerable material damage.
The female driver was taken to the Virgen de la Arrixaca University Hospital in Murcia.
The driver of the first vehicle was found to be a 67 years old male resident of Totana and showed obvious symptoms of the intake of alcoholic beverages, for which he was given the mandatory breathalyzer tests, yielding a positive result of 0.82 and 0.83 milligrams of alcohol per liter of exhaled air, in other words, three times over the legal limit.
The driver now faces charges as the alleged perpetrator of two crimes against road safety, for driving in a manifestly reckless manner, doing so in the opposite direction to the established one, and for doing so under the influence of alcoholic beverages.
