ARCHIVED - Events, sporting competitions and festivities cancelled or postponed throughout Murcia as coronavirus worries escalate
Check shortly before attending any event as cancellations are being announced thick and fast
The regional government in Murcia has not seen fit to decree a ban on all events involving large numbers of people in the face of the spread of the coronavirus in Spain, a measure which has already been implemented to one degree or another in other regions of the country, but despite this numerous gatherings and events have already been cancelled in the Region and many more are likely to go the same way as the escalation of the emergency shows no sign of slowing as yet.
Anyone planning to attend any kind of public function is advised to check beforehand whether the event is still going ahead as scheduled.
Many sporting events are being postponed by the minute, including the Ruta de las Fortalezas endurance race in Cartagena which attracts thousands of athletes, the Lorca duathlon, the Mazarrón cycling championships planned for the weekend of 28th/29th, Águilñas has cancelled its orientation league event scheduled for this coming weekend, and all major football fixtures will be played behind closed doors.
At the three universities of Murcia - the University of Murcia, the UCAM and the UPCT – all public gatherings have been cancelled or postponed indefinitely (although classes are going ahead at least for the time being), and all over the Region dozens of events have fallen victim to the epidemic. These include the following (although the list is lengthening by the hour):
- “Murcia se mueve” (13th March, postponed until September)
- “Murcia Juega” (13th-15th March, postponed until September)
- “Murcia Cultura y Ciudadanía” (12th March)
- Concert by the Turin Symphony Orchestra at the Auditorio Víctor Villegas (13th March)
- First concert in the “Bach Cartagena” cycle (11th March).
A further example is the cancellation of a motorhome rally in Ricote this coming weekend, and the local festivities in Mazarrón are also affected with several events cancelled following the discovery of the first case in the municipality last night.
No decision has yet been made regarding the holding of weekly street markets in Murcia, and there is already speculation that the processions and other events of Semana Santa (and the Fiestas de Primavera the week after Easter in the city of Murcia) could be under threat.
The Fallas in Valencia has also been cancelled, although the regional government of Valencia hopes to hold the celebrations later in the year; many people from Murcia attend this event on coachtrips, so check with your travel agent if you have booked this, or any other coachtrips.
Institutional events cancelled:
- The national foot and ankle surgery conference at the Auditorio Víctor Villegas which was scheduled for 20th and 21st March (postponed until January 2021)
- A Hispano-Mexican conference related to pediatrics (12th March, postponed until October)
(These two events are postponed in line with the regional health service instructions to cancel meetings involving 20 or more health professionals.)
- The celebration of the official day in celebration of the Policía Local in Murcia (17th March).
Most important measures introduced by the national and regional governments
- Schools are closed for at least two weeks in the regions of Madrid and La Rioja and in and around the city of Vitoria in the Basque Country.
- All major sporting events across the country, both professional and amateur, are to be held without spectators. This includes football matches from the Champions League and La Liga right down to Group XIII of the Spanish 3rd division, which features teams within the Region of Murcia.
- The government is to provide financial support for employees who are obliged to reduce their working hours in order to look after children unable to go to school.
- In Madrid, La Rioja and Vitoria a ban is in place on cultural and other events where over 1,000 spectators are expected.
- The Statefunded “Imserso” holiday and travel scheme for pensioners has been suspended for at least a month.
- All direct flights from Italy to Spain have been cancelled until at least 25th March.
In the Region of Murcia
The latest information is that the number of SARS-CoV-2 cases detected in Murcia is 11, with no fatalities, no patients in intensive care and no patients given the all-clear as yet.
The regional government and health service have introduced various measures including the following:
- Hospital visiting is limited to one person per patient
- The regional government recommends that employees be allowed to work from home
- Various events including congresses, concerts, conferences and sporting events have been cancelled or postponed, and others may well suffer the same fate as the epidemic spreads.
- The arrival of a cruise ship from Italy in Cartagena on 18th March has been cancelled.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel.
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity.
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell.
- Don´t panic!
- Those who suspect they may have contracted the coronavirus are urged NOT to visit A&E units or medical centres. Instead they should call either the 112 emergency services line or the 900 121212 number which has been set up to deal with the coronavirus in the Region: medical staff will go to their home to carry out the necessary tests and explain what further measures to take.
Symptoms
Symptoms generally start with a fever and tiredness, followed by a dry cough. After a week or so these lead to shortness of breath and some patients require hospital treatment.
Muscle pain and headaches can also accompany the early symptoms, along with nasal congestion, sore throat or diarrhoea: in short, they are not at all dissimilar to those associated with flu.
These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected but don’t develop any symptoms and don't feel unwell. Most people (about 80%) recover from the disease without needing special treatment. Around 1 out of every 6 people who gets COVID-19 becomes seriously ill and develops difficulty breathing, this being most likely in older people, and those with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes. (The WHO says that 81% will develop mild symptoms, 14% severe symptoms and only 5% will become critically ill). At the moment it is reported that between 1 and 2% of those infected are dying from the disease, although the exact figure is difficult to corroborate.
