February 24 to 26 International T20 cricket at La Manga Club

Spain take on the Isle of Man in a 6-match series in the Region of Murcia

The Spanish men’s national cricket team are starting their 2023 calendar with a 6-match T20I series against the Isle of Man at La Manga Club between Friday February 24 and Sunday February 26.

It has to be admitted that this is hardly on a par with The Ashes, which will be held in England this summer, but nonetheless it is a rare chance for cricket fans to see international action locally – and in the month of February, which would be unthinkable in the UK!

The matches start at 10.00 and 14.15 on Friday and Saturday and 9.30 and 13.45 on the Sunday, and spectators are welcome free of charge.

It may come as a surprise to learn that Spain and Isle of Man are the 36^th and 39^th highest T20i ranked teams in the world (according to the ICC), and both will be keen to triumph over one of their closest current rivals. While in La Manga Club, it is reported that many of the players will be staying at the prestigious shared ownership resort of La Quinta Club, meaning that interested spectators can catch up with them after close of play!

The Isle of Man coach Greig Wright makes the point that this is a particularly interesting series due to the scheduled dates, adding “Playing international matches in February wouldn’t be something we would be scheduling historically, but the opportunities to organise matches all year round and the weather in other European countries allow the players regular competitive opportunities.”

The 15-man playing squad for Spain includes debutant Ali Syed Shafaat, as well as Yasir Ali, Hamza Dar, Muhammad Ihsan, Muhammad Yasi, Awais Ahmed, Prince Dhiman, Muhammad Kamran, and Raja Adeel. Lorne Burns is the sole representative from the South region, whilst captain Chris Munoz-Mills and Atif Mehmood are the Sporting Alfas contingent.

Also included are Ravi Panchal and Charlie Rumisterwicz, who learned their cricket at La Manga, and the top order batsmen Daniel Doyle-Calle, a South African born cricketer whose mother is Spanish and who will be spending the majority of the European cricket season in Holland.
