ARCHIVED - Fiestas of San Anton in La Copa, Bullas: January 13 to 17
La Copa is in the north-west of the Murcia Region, in the municipality of Bullas
The San Antón patron saint day is coming up this Monday January 17 and churches across the Region are going to be honouring the saint, who is usually associated with the protection of animals. In many areas, there is also a tradition of roasting meats and consuming them during the fiestas, with the little settlement of La Copa in Bullas known for hosting one of the biggest BBQs in the Region of Murcia.

Last year, the San Antón Fiestas weren’t celebrated in the municipality of Bullas due to the coronavirus pandemic and, although this year’s festivities are also going to be slightly scaled back compared to previous years, many traditional activities will still go ahead.
Elsewhere in the Murcia Region, there will be fun fiestas celebrating San Antón in Lorca with a dog walk up to the famous castle.
Thursday January 13
- First day of Triduum (a three-day period of prayer usually preceding a Roman Catholic feast) at 7pm in the La Copa parish.
Friday January 14
- Second day of Triduum at 7pm in the La Copa parish.
Saturday January 15
- Third day of Triduum at 7pm in the La Copa parish.
- Lighting of the bonfire in honour of San Antón at 8pm.
Sunday January 16
- Mass at 11am, followed by singing and recitals in the Plaza de la Paz at 12pm (noon): ‘Coplas a San Antón’.
- Solemn procession of the image of San Antonio Abad starting at 6pm. The image will parade to the end of Calle Carril where a blessing of the animals will take place. The saint then continues its procession back to the church.
Monday January 17
- Solemn Mass in honour of the patron saint, which is usually accompanied by the parish choir.
The famous meat roast, along with the traditional dancing and music during the baile de pujas, are not going ahead this year due to Covid concerns and restrictions. Usually, in these dances, one person will pay some money to make somebody else go up and dance, allowing locals to collect money for the Fiestas.
