ARCHIVED - Five deaths and 447 positives; Coronavirus Region of Murcia 17th September
Jumilla now has an accumulated incidence rate of 933/100,000 of population, more than 4 times the regional average of 212.
On Thursday regional Health Minister, Manuel Villegas, presented the coronavirus figures relating to Wednesday 16th September, a day on which there were five fatalities and the number of new cases diagnosed by PCR in the region rose by a further 447 positives, bringing the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 15,131.
The 447 new diagnoses of covid-19, 77 more than the previous day, are spread around the region as follows; 84 correspond to Murcia City, the municipality with the highest number of positives diagnosed in the region to date, 73 to Totana (already been back into confinement and heading that way again, never having properly cleared the virus from amongst the population), 70 to Lorca (now in confinement with level 1 restrictions), 32 to Cartagena, 25 to Jumilla (also in level 1 flexible confinement), 18 to Molina de Segura, 14 to Torre Pacheco, 14 to Yecla, 13 to Cieza, 10 to Mazarrón, 8 to Los Alcázares, 8 to Alhama de Murcia, 8 to Lorquí, 8 to San Javier, 7 to Beniel, and 6 to Mula. The rest are distributed among various municipalities in smaller quantities)
Cases diagnosed during the last 7 days, followed by rate per 100,000 of population (IA rate).
The regional average is 212 (same as yesterday), so anything below that figure is low.
Note, the first figure shown is the actual number of cases diagnosed in the last 7 days, the second is the IA rate for the last 7 days: In brackets the number of cases is indicated as either a positive or negative compared to the situation on the previous day)
Abanilla 2/36 (0) ( This means 2 cases in the last two weeks and an IA rate of 36, so very low, with no change in case numbers from yesterday)

Fatalities
Five fatalities were reported for Wednesday, two male and three female, bringing the daily total up to 187. The graph above shows how the number of deaths has suddenly started to intensify; throughout all of June there were only two fatalities, in July just one, and then the acceleration begins. This is now the ninth consecutive day on which fatalities have been recorded, and brings the fatalities so far this month to 27.
PCR testing
Just over 3,500 PCR tests were undertaken on Wednesday, the increased number of PCR points around the region increasing the pace of testing. The graph above shows the number of tests increasing in blue and the red line shows the percentage of the tests giving a positive result; yesterday 12% of the tests taken yielded positives.
To date, 200,545 PCR tests have been undertaken and 66,441 antibody tests. The figures of those cured are ONLY drawn from amongst those who have taken a PCR test, and of these, 6,455 are classed as “cured”.
Hospitalisations
Graph 3 shows the hospitalisations situation, with blue showing general admissions and red those in intensive care.
6,453 of the ACTIVE cases tested by PCR are in home isolation. This leaves 330 in hospital, 58 of whom are in intensive care. At the moment, the hospital numbers are staying stable and have not increased in the last week as the number of admissions is being equalled out by the discharges, deaths and recoveries, as most of the patients have mild cases and are staying at home.
Residencia care homes
83 residents and 36 care home workers are currently in amongst the active cases, spread across 8 care homes.
Regional health minister asks for “a month of discipline”
During his presentation the regional health minister accepted that the regional government “had not lost its concern about the current situation, “ but insisted that the region was well prepared and had 1500 beds which could potentially be used for coronavirus patients, had plenty of materials in stock and was well placed to obtain more should that be necessary.
However, he reiterated that “the efforts made by personnel and to buy materials” were “pointless” if the public continued to ignore the safety measures in place and did not follow the guidelines, “we need at least one month of social discipline to return to normality “.
