ARCHIVED - Free facemasks for the over 65s in Murcia Region and for the residents of Puerto Lumberas
The Murcia government announces free masks for the over-65s throughout the Region
The Town Hall of Puerto Lumbreras has announced that it is to distribute facemasks to all of the residents of the municipality, beginning this week with those aged over 60, who will receive 3,000 of the items which over the last two months have become one of the most sought-after commodities in Spain during the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
Next week the beneficiaries will be children aged 12 and under, before the scheme is extended to include the rest of the 15,000-strong population, and last week another 4,000 masks were handed out to those working in the businesses which were allowed to re-open following the economic shutdown over the Easter period.
The Town Hall has acquired the masks for the local company Instacor and from volunteers including the Alzheimer association ALDEA and the Asociación de Mujeres Amigas Sin Fronteras, and they will be distributed by Town Hall staff, Protección Civil and other volunteers who will follow strict safety protocols. The timing of the deliveries to children will coincide with them being allowed out to walk in the open air for the first time in six weeks as of Sunday 26th April.
Free masks for over 65s
At the same time, the regional government of Murcia has announced that half a million surgical-standard masks are to be handed out to those aged over 65 and registered with the Murcian Health Authorities through the network of pharmacies in the Region. There are approximately 236,000 people in this age group in Murcia and in order to reduce their possible exposure to contagion it will be permitted for relatives to collect their masks as long as they present their health service cards at dispensing chemists.
Planning for the implementation of this measure has been on-going for the last week, and the policy is one which has already been adopted in the regions of Valencia and Catalunya.
At the moment no timescale has been given for the distribution of the masks; all that has been said is that will be undertaken "progressively" throughout the region. Should further information be published by the regional government, this will be posted in a separate article.
90 per cent of the 123 Covid-19 fatalities in Murcia so far have been patients aged 70 or over, and while facemasks are an important way of protecting the elderly from becoming infected the Murcia government also continues to stress the need to continue the practices of frequent hand-washing and observing social distancing recommendations.
Fernando López Miras, the president of the regional government, is also expected to announce the production in Yecla of a further 80,000 re-usable masks per week for use by the population in general, and in total around 600,000 will be distributed over the next few weeks, all of them subjected to quality control approval. These masks will also be available in the network of pharmacies throughout the Region.

Our local area groups are as follows. These are designed to filter locally specific information and may be used by clubs, charities, any of the businesses who work with us to ensure information is available to residents in English and for those living in the specific areas. They are not buy and sell groups, do not accept any bickering or argumentative so and so's, are not "open for any old rubbish" pages, and are not trying to compete with your local comunity groups, they are specifically for sharing good, relevant local information and we hope you will use them for that during this difficult time.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
