ARCHIVED - Heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible snow: Spain forecast Dec 9-11
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
A squall crossing Spain on Friday December 9 will leave heavy rainfall in its path
The wet, bleak and blustery weather of late looks set to continue in large parts of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands this weekend with the passing of a storm that threatens to leave heavy rainfall in its wake.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), a change in wind direction will see temperatures fall and could lead to snowfall at relatively low levels throughout the weekend.
Widespread rain is forecast on Friday December 9 with the heaviest rainfall expected in the west and south of the peninsula. Once again, the most intense and persistent downpours are likely in Extremadura and Andalusia.
Occasional showers are likely in the east of Catalonia, where they are likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms by late afternoon that could spread to the rest of the east of the country.
Daytime temperatures will decrease in the western third, southern plateau and eastern Andalusia, and will rise in the rest, more markedly in the south of Huesca where the mercury will dip to 12ºC during the day.
Winds will blow from the west and southwest in the southern half of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with strong intervals in Galicia, the Strait of Gibraltar and southeast coast.
Snow is also forecast at lower levels, starting at around 2,000 metres, and dropping to 1,000 metres later in the day.
Saturday December 10 will be the driest day of the week, although rain is still likely thanks to the remnants of the squall cloud system in the central and eastern half of the country.
In the afternoon, rainfall will gradually diminish over practically the whole of Spain, with the exception of the Balearic Islands where showers and thunderstorms will persist until late afternoon. However, by the evening, a new front will cause further rainfall in Andalusia and Extremadura.
Temperatures will fall on the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, more sharply in the northern half of Spain and Mallorca, plummeting to just 6ºC in the likes of Burgos.
On Sunday December 11, temperatures will continue to drop and rain is forecast in Extremadura, western Andalusia, Ceuta, the south of Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Castilla y León, and the southeast.
Less intense precipitation is less likely to occur in the Cantabrian area, Navarra, La Rioja, western and southern Aragón, south and centre of the Mediterranean peninsular area and the east of the Balearic Islands.
Weak frosts are forecast in most of the northern half of the country and weasterly and southerly winds will prevail, with strong gusts along the north coast.
