ARCHIVED - Home for the elderly taken over by the Murcia government after coronavirus death
The Caser home failed to report any potential cases of Covid-19 the day before the fatality
The department of Women, Equality, LGTBI, Families and Social Policy in the Region of Murcia has taken over the management of the Caser residence for the elderly in Santo Ángel, a few kilometres to the south of the regional capital, after information was received that one of the residents died on Sunday from the effects of the coronavirus.
During a video-conference held during the weekend the regional government informed all old people’s homes in Murcia that information was to be provided immediately regarding any suspicion of a patient being infected with Covid-19, but on Sunday an 85-year-old resident at the Caser home died in the Hospital Quirón in the city of Murcia just hours after Caser had reassured those concerned that the situation in the home was completely normal.
In consequence, on Monday morning the Military Emergencies Unit were called in to help take over the running of the establishment in Santo Ángel, where there are 42 permanent residents, and the entire premises are to be disinfected as one of the first steps taken.
The latest victim was the third to succumb to the coronavirus in Murcia, where the number of cases confirmed has risen to 345: another 23 patients are in intensive care. It is worth remembering that elsewhere in Spain some of the worst examples of the potentially lethal effects of Covid-19 have occurred in homes of this kind, with one residence in Madrid having reported at least 18 deaths over the last two weeks.
The latest available data for the number of Covid-19 cases by region is as follows:
Andalucía: 1,961 (58 fatalities, 77 in intensive care, 50 cured)
Aragón: 638 (32 fatalities, 52 in intensive care, 3 cured)
Asturias: 594 (12 fatalities, 22 in intensive care, 21 cured)
Balearic Islands: 400 (10 fatalities, 27 in intensive care, 18 cured)

Castilla y León: 2,055 (102 fatalities, 120 in intensive care, 117 cured)
Catalunya: 5,925 (245 fatalities, 551 in intensive care, 644 cured))

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
