Homeowners on Murcia resorts urged to vote and make their voices heard at Town Halls
Even those who live on urbanisations and resorts in Spain can make a difference by voting in local elections

There are municipal elections being held in Spain this Sunday May 28 to elect new local government teams in the country’s Town Halls, or Ayuntamientos.
By voting in these local Spanish elections, people who live here have a unique opportunity to actively participate in the decision-making process within their community, according to community administrators Resortalia.
“Owning a property in a resort does not limit your ability to engage in local politics,” they say.
As community administrators of several high-profile resorts not only in the Region of Murcia but also in the province of Alicante, Resortalia are in near-constant contact with Town Halls to resolve issues for the resort owners and act as intermediary.
“We have great relations with most of them (even when we have had to sue them frequently when needed!),” say the team from Resortalia of the Town Halls, “but we have always felt that, sometimes, the needs of a Resort are not taken into account by politicians.”
This, they say, is because the elected officials simply tot up the numbers “and see that they have other ways to spend the municipal money,” namely way that will secure them more votes in future elections.
Nonetheless, they point out, “Municipal elections play a crucial role in the functioning of any Town Hall since, through these elections, citizens have the chance to elect local representatives who will make decisions on their behalf.
“Municipalities, as local governing bodies, are responsible for essential public services such as urban planning, transportation, and culture. Participating in these elections means having the opportunity to directly influence policies and decisions that impact your daily life.”
Requirements for voting in municipal elections
In order to be able to exercise your right to vote in municipal elections in Spain, you must meet certain requirements, depending on whether you are an official Spanish citizen or are registered as a foreign national resident in Spain.
Some key requirements for voting in Spanish local elections:
- Be at least 18 years old: The minimum age to vote in Spain is 18. If you are at least that age, you can participate in municipal elections.
- Be registered on the municipal census (padrón): To vote, you need to be registered as a resident in the municipality where the elections will take place. The census, also known as the padrón, is the administrative registry that records citizens’ residency information.
- European Union citizenship: If you are a citizen of a European Union member country, you have the right to vote in municipal elections on equal terms with Spanish citizens.
- Nationalities with reciprocity agreements: Some countries, including the UK, Norway and New Zealand, have reciprocity agreements with Spain that allow their citizens to participate in municipal elections. It’s important to verify if your country of origin has such an agreement. Also, British citizens must register their intention to vote in advance of each election.
How many votes are required by some of the main Town Halls in Murcia?
Some municipalities in the Region of Murcia have a large number of resorts under their jurisdiction, including Alhama de Murcia, Fuente Álamo and Torre Pacheco.
In Fuente Álamo, it has been estimated that approximately 300-400 votes could be sufficient to secure a councillor position, which could make all the difference when it comes to securing someone in power who has the interests of local resorts at heart.
In previous elections in Torre Pacheco, it has been estimated that around 500-600 votes may be necessary to secure a councillor. However, this is an approximate range and can vary depending on the specific circumstances of each election.
Similarly, in Alhama, it has been estimated that approximately 600-700 votes could be enough to obtain a councillor. Again, these figures are approximate and can vary from one election to another.
Finally, previous municipal elections suggest that around 800-900 votes could be enough to get a councillor in San Javier. It is important to keep in mind that these numbers are approximate and can vary in each election.
All this is relevant because, at most of the resorts that Resortalia administer, there are a higher number of owners than the number of votes required to appoint a councillor. As such, the votes from people living on these resorts can be decisive in the direction of the municipal government.
That’s why Resortalia is actively encouraging people living on the resorts it administers to participate in elections in the municipality, to create real involvement when it comes to policies at the Town Hall because, in their words, “We are sure that will improve the future situations of our Resorts.”
