With these data in mind, the regional Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño, has indicated that he is in favour of maintaining masks in public places “where there are crowds, the safety distance cannot be maintained and the public is served.”
“Weeks ago the mandatory use of the mask outdoors was eliminated and we still see people on the street wearing it. It has been shown that the mask is the means that best allows us to protect ourselves from contagion and it will continue to be advisable to wear it in crowds, when the safety distance cannot be maintained and in spaces that are not well ventilated,” he said.
Coronavirus infections
The regional health authorities have reported 98 new positive infections on Sunday April 17 among those over the age of 60 and vulnerable populations. It should be noted, however, that fewer tests are carried out on Sundays to diagnose the virus.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Easter Sunday saw 130 people admitted to the Region’s hospitals with coronavirus, which is 33% more than the same day the previous week, when 98 people were hospitalised.
There are 12 patients being treated in the Region’s ICUs, which is one more than last Sunday.
Eight Covid-related fatalities have been recorded in the past week, brining the overall death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 2,221.
Cumulative incidence rate
The accumulated incidence rate at 14 days has exceeded 600 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Moreover, the 7-day figure has risen to more than half this figure (324.9 cases) which is a worrying indication that this trend of increases could continue.
Vaccination data
Since the last update, 91.79% of the entire population of the Murcia Region has had a least one dose. In addition, 84.22% of people are now double jabbed.
Silent Omicron
The predominant variant in Spain right now is the silent Omicron (sublineage BA.2), which is the most contagious so far, although it appears to be less virulent. In addition, other strains such as XE continue to circulate, which the World Health Organisation has warned is even more transmissible than Omicron.
