During a meeting with the town's mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, owners of bars, restaurants and nightlife venues expressed concerns over limitations, which mean they must close at 12.30am, serving the last customer at midnight, along with continued capacity restrictions. The measures are in place until at least July 25.
In addition, they pointed out the aid they have received has been "insufficient or non-existent in some cases", and demanded that anti-Covid measures are not generalised across the board in an attempt to "control young people" and botellon drinking sessions.
"We may survive this summer, but I don't think we'll make it through the winter due to the difficulties we are facing trying to keep our businesses open", warned one Orihuela bar owner.
During the meeting, the mayor stressed that the restrictions "are outside the town council's powers", but that the local authority will try to "make its voice heard" so that any further measures are not adopted so "disproportionately".
"We all prefer our young people to be in controlled premises and not in areas where there is no one to keep an eye on them, but I think that before imposing all these measures the government should listen to this particular sector that is being punished," said Bascuñana, adding that rather than "penalising" the tourist and hospitality sectors, "individual responsibility and prudence" should instead be exercised.
