Reports of youngsters gathering at botellones in Cartagena (Murcia) are almost constant
The Mayoress of Cartagena has spoken out about the ‘botellones’ that plague the city every weekend, in which hundreds, even thousands, of youngsters gather in public parks, car parks and streets to drink and socialise. On Friday night, September 24, officers from the Policía Local in Cartagena had to disperse around 600 people who were participating in a botellón near the University Campus (UCAM) while having bottles and other items thrown at them. However, this problem is not exclusive to Cartagena, as almost every weekend, reports flood in about illegal botellones across Spain, most notably in large cities such as Barcelona and Madrid.Noelia Arroyo, Mayoress of Cartagena, has stated that “this is a reality we have to live with, but we need more resources”, adding that the council is working towards new solutions. She also stated that, in the past, local police forces have been able to prevent botellones in certain areas, but this is not a viable long-term solution, as the youngsters simply find new places to gather. She thinks that the problem requires better solutions than simply adding more police officers and fines, such as social action and asking teens and young people to be more responsible. An added danger to these gatherings is that some individuals take advantage of the crowds to carry out illegal activities, such as drug dealing or theft, not to mention other issues associated with botellones, such as coronavirus outbreaks and drink driving.Police officers have also noted that, when they are called to disperse the botellones, ‘crowd behaviour’ often kicks in and the drunken teens act violently towards the authorities, making the job of dispersing rowdy young people even more difficult.Image: Archive
