ARCHIVED - Incidence exceeds 3,000 cases for first time ever: Spain Covid update January 12
A further 247 people have died and Spain remains firmly in the high-risk category
The aftermath of the Christmas celebrations is well and truly upon us as Spain is experiencing a rebound of infections, hospitalisations and Covid-related fatalities, and the cumulative incidence rate, arguably the best indication of how the pandemic is progressing, has barrelled past the 3,000-mark on Tuesday January 11 for the first time ever.
Given the rising cases, the WHO has halted President Sanchez’s plans to begin treating coronavirus less like a pandemic and more similar to the ordinary flu, insisting that it is premature to change the status of the health crisis.
Coronavirus infections
The autonomous communities have registered 134,942 new Covid cases, 79,601 of which were diagnosed in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 7,592,242.
This figure is considerably higher than the 117,775 positives reported on the same day last week.
In the past two weeks, a total of 1,441,506 Covid cases have been registered.
In the first week of 2022 - between January 1 and 7 – a total of 2,087,443 Covid diagnostic tests were performed. The positivity of the tests is 38.31%, well above the 5% at which the WHO considers the pandemic controlled.
Cumulative incidence rate
This all-important 14-day figure has breached the 3,000-mark for the first time in the pandemic to reach 3,042 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and places Spain firmly in the very high-risk category.
No community is now under 1,000 cases but the situation is particularly serious in Navarra (7,253), the Basque country (6,425), Aragon (5,779) and Castilla y León (4,392).
Andalucía is holding the worst of the pandemic at bay for the time being with an incidence rate of 1,577 while the Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community are under the national average once again on January 11 with 3,090 and 2,581 cases respectively.
Younger people aged between 20 and 29 years continue to have the highest number, at 4,274 cases but the figure is also creeping up for the older populations despite the high uptake of booster jabs.
Hospitalisations
There are 16,555 people hospitalised for Covid throughout Spain (up slightly from 16,496 on Monday) while 2,200 patients are in the ICU – no change from the previous day.
Seven Spanish regions are at a high-risk level due to ICU bed occupancy - between 15 and 25%: Asturias, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla La Mancha, Ceuta, Murcia and La Rioja.
Galicia is the only community still at the low-risk level (between 5 and 10%) while Andalucía (12.53% and Extremadura (12.64%) remain at medium risk.
At the highest level, with an occupancy rate of more than 25% are: Aragón (28.32%), Balearic Islands (25.38%), Castilla y León (27.67%), Catalonia (44.23%), Valencian Community (26.43%), Madrid (27.39%), Melilla (29.41%), Navarra (29.06%) and the Basque Country (34.4%).
Fatalities
Another 247 people have lost their lives to Covid, up from the 116 fatalities reported on Monday, which brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis in Spain to 90,383.
Vaccination data
As of January 11, 38,093,934 people over the age of 12, representing 90.4% of the population, have been double jabbed while 92.4% of people have received one vaccine.
The booster dose has now been administered to 89.29% of people over the age of 70 while 23.91% of those aged between 40 and 49 have already received a third dose.
The situation in Europe
A total of 109,034,624 cases have been reported throughout Europe since the start of the pandemic.
Regarding the incidence, with data from this Monday, the United Kingdom (3,613), Italy (3,108) and France (3,995) were already above 3,000 cases.
Worldwide, 305,904,601 cases and 5,486,304 deaths have been reported throughout the pandemic.
