This weekend is one of the biggest Bank Holiday weekends of the year and there are many activities taking place across the Region as Easter comes to an end and the Spring fiestas begin.

We start with Easter. Friday is the main day for processions, with the biggest events of the week taking place on both Friday morning and evening. Friday morning in Murcia is the procession of the Salzillos, the day on which these sculptural masterpieces leave the Salzillo Museum to parade through Murcia. The evening processions right throughout the Region are also the biggest of the week. On Sunday morning the Resurrection day parades are completely different, light and flowers, white silk and doves, joyous occasions which are well worth making the effort to go and see.

Following Easter the Spring Fiestas begin. Murcia celebrates the Fiestas de la Primavera, a huge celebration which includes the Bando de la Huerta on Tuesday, the Murcia en la Primavera Parade on the Wednesday, along with the Homenaje al Pastel de Carne, the homage to the great Murcian meat pie in which 10,000 pastel de carne and beer are handed out to attendees. The city is filled with barracas, selling tapas, and the streets with residents in costume, honouring the folk traditions of the Murcian huertanos. At the end of the week, this merges with the Entierro de la Sardina, the burial of the sardine, a night of murcian madness.

This coming weekend there are lots of activities taking place around the Mar Menor as the summer season begins. Los Alcázares is celebrating its Berbers Fiestas, with one of the best artesan markets which takes place in the region, three nights of free live musical entertainment and lots of thrills and spills as badly behaved Berbers attack Los Alcázares. San Pedro del Pinatar has the 1st Seaworld exhibition, with a host of Mar Menor related events, demonstrations and displays, as well as train rides and boat rides for all the family, San Javier has an Outlet Fair, with lots of shopping bargains and a Tapas route, Torre Pacheco finishing off the Mar Menor offering with a gastronomic Tapas Route to enjoy.

Airports

If this is all just too energetic, then there´s always the news. Normally, when Spain goes on holiday, the news also goes on holiday, but this week has been fairly busy. President Valcárcel dropped a bit of a bombshell this week as although Hacienda has approved the transfer of the San Javier airport customs point to Corvera Airport, delays in obtaining licenses mean that Corvera airport will not begin operating fully until Summer 2013.
Then on top of that, Premursa announced that they too were undergoing some "complications" with their attempts to buy the third plot of land earmarked for the Paramount Park site in Alhama, so will cut the land out of their plans altogether and reduce the scale of the complex accordingly, although the actual park element will remain the same size. On top of that we´ve had major drug hauls in Mazarrón and crates of oranges, U-Boot torpedoes turning up in fishing nets, bodies in wells, fuel price hikes, cigarette price hikes, massive budgetary cuts and depressing unemployment figures. But never mind, the "Paramount Factor" has positioned Murcia as number 22 in the Worlds hottest property investments league table, even though the regions own promotors say punters aren´t looking at Murcia because "nobody knows where it is."
