Curbing climate change and recycling are nominally major priorities for both governments and companies, and groundbreaking carbon removal technology offers an option to make headway addressing the two environmental issues at the same time.

One of the world’s leading producers of industrial and medical gases, Japanese firm Nippon Gases, plans to invest millions building a plant in Cartagena to capture and reuse CO2 to convert it, through an innovative system, into substances suitable for agriculture and food use.

In collaboration with Vertex Bioenergy, which owns oil and energy company Ecocarburantes Españoles located in the Escombreras Valley, Nippon Gases will invest around 10 million euros in the factory, which could be in operation by the end of this year.

The multinational plans to build the factory next to Ecocarburantes, as this plant will be its main supplier of CO2, around 45,000 tonnes per year.

This will mean that Vertex Bioenergy “will operate [in a way that is] more environmentally friendly”, by eliminating its emissions, whilst Nippon Gases, once it purifies the gas, will be able to sell it on for use in making everything from fish food to cement.

It will also produce by-products for greenhouse crops.

According to the Japanese firm, the 5,400m2 factory will be operated with 100% renewable energy, and become one of the few plants of its kind in Spain.

The two companies reached an agreement last year to embark on the project, which will be located on 70,000m2 of land owned by Ecocarburantes.

Nippon Gases reportedly selected Cartagena due to its ideal location close to the emission source, necessary for its connection by pipeline, and has future plans to invest a further 50 million euros over the next few years setting up similar plants across Spain.

Part of the Taiyo Nippon Sanso Group, the firm is already present in 13 countries with more than 100 production facilities.
