Jet2 intend to operate at Corvera airport from November 2012.
The airline urged the Regional Government to delay the San Javier - Corvera switchover until after the 2012 summer season.
Senior Management from Jet2 have recently visited the installations of the new Corvera International Airport at Corvera, following meetings with the Murcian Regional Government.
Although the infrastructure of the airport is virtually completed and is scheduled for completion before the end of the year, the logistical issues of obtaining air traffic control permits and opening a customs border will take several further months as these processes cannot be initiated legally until the infrastructure is completed.
The Regional Government and airport concessionary, Aeromur, had originally indicated that the airport could open for Easter holiday traffic, the Semana Santa celebrations representing one of the biggest traffic movement holidays of the year, but these projections shifted slightly to "early summer " a few weeks ago when the Regional President, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, announced that the San Javier airport was to close, with Aena transferring its operations to the new Corvera airport.
Although negotiations are at an advanced stage with Aena, there is still no clear indication of when the transfer to the new airport will take place, nor indeed what date the airport will actually open.
Many readers have emailed with queries about which airport they re likely to be flying into, keen to book accommodation and transport for the forthcoming year, in particularly the summer season.
This lack of clarity is the main topic which the management team were keen to discuss with the Region of Murcia team, Jet2 being desirous of maintaining continuity of flights for its customers during 2012.
Jet2.com urged the regional Government and the new airport team to ensure minimum passenger disruption by delaying the airport switchover until after the summer season, in November - thus enabling customers to make their travel plans for next year.
In order to continue to provide the best possible customer service, the management stated in a press release today that Jet2.coms 50 plus staff at San Javier will be transferred to the new airport when it opens next year, to ensure the same seamless, friendly service passengers have come to expect, a welcome message of support for all those who have been so uncertain about their employment prospects due to the Aena transfer, as well as for concerned passengers.
Ian Doubtfire, Managing Director of Jet2.com, commented: "We are very impressed with the user friendly airport facilities that have been built in Corvera and think it will be a very efficient airport when operational. The regional government has promised to keep us updated on the continuing discussions with AENA and have ensured that there are no disruptions to any of Jet2.coms scheduled flights to this important region - meaning passengers can look forward to their holidays.
In the meantime we anticipate our full operation to continue at San Javier and will ensure that there is a seamless transfer at the end of 2012."
Jet2 has become an increasingly important partner for the Region of Murcia, amplifying the number of routes available to users and helping to ensure a reliable flights schedule, even during the winter months when airline schedules are cut back.
Jet 2 provides services from 7 UK airports to Murcia, and 8 to Alicante, and has now extended its relationship with Murcia by adding inclusive holiday packages to its tourism offering, with inclusive packages to the luxurious La Manga Club via www.jet2holidays.com.
It will be interesting to see how the Region of Murcia and Aena react to the suggestion that Corvera should not open until November next year, after the summer season, although comforting that Jet2 have expressed their willingness to continue operating from the Region of Murcia and their interest in flying from Corvera International airport, beginning in November.
This is the first public announcement in relation to an airline transferring their operations to Corvera from San Javier, and is positive news for all those concerned about the future availability of flights in and out of the Region of Murcia.
