ARCHIVED - Local charities will need help as quarantine order cuts off fundraising and closes shops
Can you spare the price of a cup of coffee to help a local charity????
Finally, tonight, spare a thought for the charities in the Murcia Region who are going to find life hard due to the enforced quarantining of the municipalities of Águilas, San Pedro, San Javier, Los Alcázares, Cartagena, La Unión and Mazarrón which was announced today in order to limit the spread of coronavirus.
Throughout these municipalities many charities work hard within our expat community, raising funds for a multitude of good causes.
Although these unsung heros are largely anonymous, they're out there day after day visiting people in hospital who have nobody else to care for them, running sociable gatherings to help those who are on their own, ferrying cancer patients to and from hospital for appointments, doing a bit of shopping for someone incapable of doing it for themselves, buying equipment for charities and hospitals, helping those who need help and caring for the many, many animals abandoned and maltreated, helping them to find new homes, walking dogs condemned to life in a perrera and raising money to send them abroad to forever homes.
All these charities depend on us to buy things from their shops, attend their fundraising events and supply the manpower to do this amazing work, and today their legs were cut from underneath them by a blanket measure to try and halt the spread of coronavirus through not only this region, but also Spain.
Their shops must close along with those of the many other businesses forced to shut their doors today, their fundraising events have to be cancelled along with those of the bars and restaurants who give them so much support and their activities and support networks will be curtailed by the quarantine order.
Some will find little hardship in the order, but for others raising funds will be a nightmare.
Today the first request for help was posted by Friends of Mazarrón Animals, who run-up huge vets bills helping animals in the Mazarrón area. They help out time after time after time, often when other charities are unable to do so because their own facilities are bursting at the seams with unwanted dogs or they simply don´t have any volunteers able to help and work tirelessly to send dogs abroad to forever homes. They need help as their main fundraiser this month has had to be cancelled and they have vet fees to pay.
Can you spare the price of a cup of coffee or two to help them out?
If your charity needs help or is managing to find cunning ways of continuing to help the community please get in touch so we can share your message. We're not much to look at we know, but this site was used by nearly two and a half million people in the last 12 months and we have nearly 50,000 followers on social media and in our groups. All of that is yours to use to spread your message and help us all to get through whatever the next few weeks are going to bring.
Many of our readers who love this region are sitting in their home countries just waiting for all this to die down so they can come back to their beloved Costa Cálida and they will help if you ask.

Follow Murcia Today on Facebook to keep up to date with all the latest updates locally for the Region of Murcia and the main information for the rest of Spain: https://www.facebook.com/MurciaToday/. Please note, Facebook is limiting the number of posts we are able to make in local groups, and the sheer volume of incoming information is overwhelming, so all updates and cancellations of events etc in the Murcia region will be posted on this main page and may not be shared into many local groups. PLEASE help to support the flow and sharing of information by following this page and sharing the information into groups to which you have access.
What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
