ARCHIVED - Local surgeries or consultorios closed in Murcia as resources are relocated to medical centres
The Murcia health service restructures its services to offer a more efficient service during the coronavirus emergency
The regional health service in Murcia (SMS) has announced that as a result of the coronavirus emergency “consultorios” or doctor’s surgeries are to be closed and their resources in terms of both medical supplies and staff are to be transferred to the central medical centres (“centros de salud”) within each area.
If necessary those “centros de salud” will open on Sundays and public holidays (including this Thursday 19th March) in order to attend to the demand for medical services, a measure which had already been anticipated last week by Manuel Villegas, the minister for Health in the regional government.
An example of what this means is that the “consultorio” in Camposol, in the municipality of Mazarrón, will close its doors as the service is temporarily re-located to the medical centre in the town of Mazarrón. Should anyone in the Mazarrón municipality suspect that they have coronavirus, additonal assistance is being offered through FAST, who are helping to clarify the details of the medical situation should residents call their helpline and are helping the Emergency Services by handling calls for general information. Click here for full information.
Another effect of the re-organization is that the medical staff in emergencies units (SUAP) will be working 12-hour shifts instead of the 17- or 24-hour rosters they are normally required to complete: this not only improves conditions for the personnel involved but is also expected to make the attention offered to patients more efficient.
Patients are asked to make telephonic requests for assistance rather than going to medical centres. SUAP centres are available in most municipalities and act as a fliter and support mechanism for hospital emergency units.
Pharmacies are repeating prescriptions for 6 months to avoid further burdening medical resources.
All non-urgent operations and surgical consultations have been cancelled. Do NOT go to a hospital for a regular check-up or non-urgent appointment. These have all been cancelled.
DO NOT GO TO A HEALTH OR SUAP CENTRE UNLESS THERE IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY.
REMAIN INSIDE YOUR HOME AS EVERY CONTACT INCREASES THE POSSIBILITY THAT YOU WILL EITHER TRANSMIT OR CATCH CORONAVIRUS.LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY SAFE.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
