Hotels and restaurants are fully booked for the most important days of the Holy Week, just as the tourist board launches its digital platform ‘Play Lorca’ to showcase the city’s heritage

Lorca is preparing for one of the most vibrant and economically significant times of the year as the city’s hotels and restaurants have already hung the “full” sign for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, the most important days of Holy Week.

The remaining days of the Passion Week are also seeing exceptionally high demand, with occupancy and reservations in bars and restaurants reaching 80%, according to Santiago Parra, the Councillor for Tourism.

He described the impact of Holy Week as unmatched, saying, “It is impossible to improve on the economic impact” that Passion Week has generated in recent years.

The enthusiasm for Lorca’s renowned processions is also clear in the demand for seats in the stands. Those for the biblical parades on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday have already sold out weeks in advance.

The Palm Sunday procession is close to reaching capacity too, and tickets for the procession of the Friday of Sorrows, which marks the start of Passion Week in Lorca, are selling fast. Ticket sales began just a week ago, drawing long queues outside the headquarters of the White and Blue brotherhoods from the early hours of the morning.

In a move to further enhance Lorca’s visibility as a cultural and tourist destination, the City Council has introduced a new digital platform called Play Lorca.

This online space functions as a dynamic archive, hosting a wealth of audiovisual content that captures the city’s traditions, cultural heritage and tourist appeal.

Visitors can explore broadcasts, documentaries and promotional clips produced by the City Council or in collaboration with local and national media outlets. As Easter approaches, the platform is spotlighting Lorca’s processions with a selection of relevant content, including RTVE archival footage, television programmes and special features.

Play Lorca is designed to be a living, evolving project, with new content added regularly. Future updates will include audiovisual material dedicated to Lorca’s key tourist landmarks, such as the Palacio de Guevara, the old collegiate church of San Patricio and El Calvario, with additional locations being introduced each month.

The platform is also built with accessibility in mind. Thanks to YouTube’s transcription and simultaneous translation features, the content is available to foreign visitors and people with hearing disabilities. Its user-friendly design ensures a smooth browsing experience, allowing both residents and tourists to easily explore the city’s cultural offerings with just a click.

The rich and extensive history of Lorca has left a legacy of archaeological sites, and historic buildings, around which the modern City has built its tourism industry. Amongst these are Lorca Castle, the Jewish Quarter of the castle and Synagogue, Lorca Tourist Office Plaza de España, Colegiata de San Patricio, Museo de Arqueologico Municipal, Iglesia de San Francisco, Casa Huerto Ruano, Palacio de Guevara, Iglesia de San Mateo, Pósito de los Panaderos, Convento Virgen de las Huertas, Antiguo Convento de la Merced, Iglesia del Carmen and the Teatro Guerra.

Unfortunately Lorca has also been prone to natural disaster, suffering a Gota Fría on September 28th 2012, as well as an earthquake which measured 5.3 on the Richter scale on 11th May 2011 and claimed 9 lives. Since this earthquake the city has been rebuilding, winning recognition for its Lorca, Open for Restoration initiative, which used the restoration of the city as a tourist attraction whilst it rebuilt its historical buildings, some of which are currently still not open.

Lorca Tourist Office The tourist office itself has temporarily relocated until the renovations are completed and is on Calle San Patricio near the church.

Lorca also has an area of coastline incorporating the Parque Regional de Cabo Cope - Puntas de Calnegre, in the Sierra de Almenara, which includes the beaches of, Puntas de Calnegre, Baño de las Mujeres, San Lorca Tourist Office Pedro, El Siscal, Cala Honda, Cuartel del Ciscar, Junquera, Cala de la Gruta, Cala Leña, Los Hierros, Cala Blanca and Playa Larga, although many are accessible only through agricultural exploitations.

However, in spite of its many attractions, the name of Lorca is synonymous with Easter, (Semana Santa) its biblical parades of International Tourist Interest status and famous throughout Spain. The week includes a Lorca Tourist Office series of parades in which the whites (Paso Blanco) and blues (Paso Azúl) try to outdo each other with the magnificence of their embroideries and the skill and daring of their horsemen.
