Lorca, Jumilla and Totana will continue in phase 1 confinement for a further week
The situation has improved in all three municipalities although the numbers of covid positives remains well above the regional average in all three
The Covid Monitoring Committee of the Region of Murcia met on Thursday and has decided that the municipalities of Lorca, Jumilla and Totana will continue for another week in phase 1 flexibilised confinement, which limits mobility within these municipalities and reduces the capacity of restaurants to 40 percent.
Jumilla councils has expressed its disappointment as the council had hoped that restrictions could be lifted as the rate of infections has been reduced from 992 to 398 per 100,000 inhabitants, however, the Minister for Health, Manuel Villegas, explained that although the situation "is under control, the current figures advise us to maintain the restrictions for another week" in this area.
The same has occurred in the urban area of Lorca, which has taken a step backwards due to the outbreak that originated in the Virgen del Alcázar private hospital. "This outbreak emphasises the need for a few more days," said the regional minister, saying that "next week the restrictions will be lifted if everything remains the same."
The head of the health department reports that the situation of covid infections in Totana is also "beginning to improve".
Figures for Thursday 8th October
On Thursday the Region of Murcia Health Authority reported 444 new cases of coronavirus, as well as confirming two further deaths; an 86 year-old man from Murcia and a 93 year old male from Totana, bringing the number of fatalities up to 226.
This brought the number of active cases on Thursday up to 8,573, and the total number of cases detected to date to 24,057.
Of the total of 443 infections detected, 83 correspond to Murcia city, 71 to Lorca, 50 to Cartagena, 45 to Totana, 19 to Jumilla and 14 to Archena, the remainder scattered around the region in smaller quantities.
The number of ICU patients rose again on Thursday, with 69 patients remaining in the intensive care units of the region, 3 more than yesterday. In total, there are 372 patients hospitalised due to covid in the Region, and 8,573 people in home isolation with mild or asymptomatic symptoms.
Outbreak in the Perpetuo Socorro Hospital in Cartagena
Manuel Villegas has also confirmed that an outbreak has been detected in the Perpetuo Socorro Hospital in Cartagena, with four patients who have tested positive. In this case, all remaining patients and professionals of the center have been tested and all have given negative results.
