ARCHIVED - Lot of misunderstanding on social media about the number of people allowed in a car
Police remain firm: only one person in a car unless absolutely necessary
Although enormous efforts are being made to ensure that the public is well-informed about the rules that must be followed during lockdown, one of the key areas of misunderstanding is the point relating to how many people are allowed to be in a vehicle in order to go shopping.
Some social media sites this morning have been sharing a news story written by RTVE España TV clarifying the latest modifications, which appears to indicate that it's fine for two people to be in a car together and believe that this translates as being able to go with the wife when she does the shopping.
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT THE CASE.
The modification to the declaration of emergency which was published on Wednesday 25th March in the Official State Bulletin merely sets down one of the minor tweaks to the original lockdown order, specifying the rules to be applied when for one reason or another the presence of two people in the same motor vehicle cannot be avoided.
It states that at no time must there be more than one person in any row of seats: so, for example, in a 9-seater minibus carrying agricultural workers to the fields only three people may travel: one in front (driving), one in the middle row and one in the back.
In addition, the maximum distance between them should be established: so, if the driver is on the left, the others should sit in the centre and on the right.
Importantly, it also states that these rules apply to journey in which more than one person MUST travel in the same vehicle
BUT THE CASES IN WHICH IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR TWO PEOPLE TO TRAVEL ARE VERY FEW.
If one member of a household has to go to work by car but cannot drive (for example, a doctor with a broken leg or without a driving licence), then clearly he or she will have to be ferried there.
If a single parent has to go shopping or to the chemist’s, then obviously he or she is not expected to leave a young infant alone at home unless another carer is available.
If a non-driver has to attend an appointment with a doctor or another fully justified appointment, a lift is necessary.
If a family member has to be taken to the airport to catch a flight, then obviously they have to be taken there and providing travel documents are provided there is no problem.
But the police in the city of Murcia have confirmed to Murcia Today on Thursday morning that this does not extend to situations where the presence of more than one person in a car can be avoided.
So, if an elderly neighbour explains that he or she needs some shopping and asks you to take them, the answer is NO. Instead, offer to do their shopping for them when you next go and to deliver it to their home.
If the kids are bouncing off the walls having not left the house for eleven days and beg to go with you to the supermarket, the answer is NO. If they are old enough they can stay home alone for half an hour, and only if they are too young for that and no other carer is available can a child accompany you – and always in the back seat on the passenger’s side.
ABOVE ALL, IF A COUPLE JUST FANCY A TRIP OUT OF THE HOUSE AND CHOOSE TO MISUNDERSTAND THE LAW FOR THE SAKE OF A TRIP TO THE SHOPS, THE ANSWER IS MOST DEFINITELY NO.
These lockdown laws are designed to protect your health and that of the population as a whole: PLEASE OBEY THEM.
If you wish to incur a fine from the police, do so in other ways: phone them up and use threatening and insulting language, report yourself for domestic violence, or drive at three times the speed limit when you really do have to leave the house.
BUT PLEASE DO NOT JUMP TO COMPLETELY UNFOUNDED AND ILLOGICAL CONCLUSIONS REGARDING THE BAN ON PASSENGERS, PUTTING THE HEALTH AND THE LIVES OF OTHERS AT RISK.
That's what the police officer we spoke to said in no uncertain terms, expressing her deep frustration that the police are still having to fine so many people for breaching the lockdown.
The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 throughout Spain has risen from 47,610 to 56,188 on Thursday lunchtime, with the number of related fatalities having reached 4,098 after an increase of 655 in the last 24 hours.
Another 3,679 patients were in intensive care (513 more than on Wednesday) amongst almost 32,000 in hospital across the country and it is known that many tens of thousands more people are positive but have not been diagnosed due to the lack of tester kits. These figures alone should be enough to justify lockdown.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
