After a meeting of the heads of departments on Wednesday December 1, it was agreed to postpone the less urgent scheduled surgical activity "so as not to further saturate the critical care beds".
The region's 14-day cumulative incidence rate has surpassed 200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and 1,259 new infections were reported on Tuesday, an upward trend that has been consistent over recent weeks.
But a breakdown of areas shows that the Marina Baixa area has one of the highest rates of infection in Alicante province, with an accumulated incidence of 395.45 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days and a total of 723 active cases.
Benidorm continues with the worst data in the region, with a rate of 572.04 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The suspension of non-urgent surgery at the hospital, which serves the whole of the Marina Baixa area of Alicante province, including Benidorm, Alfaz del Pi, Altea and La Nucia, will come into effect on Monday December 6 for at least 15 days.
Sources from the department's management have assured, however, that emergency interventions, the most serious cases, as well as the most urgent operations scheduled for oncology patients, will continue as normal.
With regard to the situation in ICU, health sources confirmed "most of the 10 patients are unvaccinated", and with only 12 beds for a registered population of almost 200,000 inhabitants, without taking into account the floating population, "the centre is on the verge of collapse".
The hospital has reportedly been diverting critical patients with pathologies other than Covid to other health centres in the province for weeks, due to a lack of beds.
At the beginning of November, ward visits were suspended after several outbreaks were detected amongst non-Covid patients.
