ARCHIVED - Maximum of 24 divers a day in the Cabo Tiñoso marine reserve in Cartagena
New limitations came into effect from October 1st
New limitations for recreational diving in the Cabo Tiñoso Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest (Cartagena) came into effect on Thursday, 1st October.
Among the measures introduced by the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment, the most notable change is the maximum number of divers per day permitted within the area: only 24. The objective of the regulation is to preserve the natural environment in the interior waters of this protected area (1,200 hectares) and disturb the aquatic fauna as little as possible.
The regulations of the protected area also include the different periods with different conditions for diving, with or without a scuba. The high season (from June to September and Easter) will have six two-hour shifts between 08.00 and 20.00, while private divers and clubs without an access code for the processing of collective authorizations will have priority in the time between 08:00 and 10:00, Monday to Friday, and between 14:00 and 16:00 on weekends.
During the low season, the rest of the year, the dives will take place between 09:00 and 17:00, with four shifts lasting two hours each. Private divers and diving clubs without a password for collective diving authorizations will have priority between 09:00 and 11:00 from Monday to Friday and on weekends from 13:00 to 15:00.
To dive in the reserve, the authorization granted by the competent general direction in matters of fishing will be mandatory, "upon request and payment of the corresponding fee, in order to comply with the established safety and protection requirements of marine reserves," the regional government says in a statement.
Some prohibitions
The regulations clarify the new prohibitions for divers and boats. For example, from now on it is prohibited to dive outside of the established hours or the authorized area, and night dives and dives from land are also prohibited, except in cell D (the compatible conservation area of 850 hectares, between La Azohía and Mazarrón). Neither is the use of mechanical underwater propulsion elements (torpedoes) permitted, or to carry instruments "that can be used for fishing or extracting marine species, except a knife for safety reasons."
The Ministry warns that “the collection or extraction of organisms or part of organisms, living or dead, animals or plants, or the extraction of rocks, minerals or archaeological remains, the feeding of wild species or the disturbance of the communities of marine organisms, carrying out sea trials or 'baptisms', as well as training practices for non-certified divers or generate any type of waste in the water ” are all prohibited.
It is forbidden to have any fishing instrument on board, as well as to anchor the boat or carry out any activity that may damage, disturb or disturb the fauna
Regarding vessels, “it is prohibited to have on board any instrument, gear or gear that can be used for fishing or extracting marine species; the anchoring of the boat in the area of cells A (around the island of Las Palomas), B and C (the areas closest to the cape), outside the of places specifically authorised; throwing any type of residue into the water during the journey and the visit in the reserve, as well as carrying out any activity that could damage, disturb or disturb the fauna of the reserve ”.
Infringements, reports the Autonomous Community, will be sanctioned "in accordance with the provisions of Law 3/2001, of March 26, on State Maritime Fishing and Law 42/2007, of December 13, on Natural Heritage and The Biodiversity".
The Cabo Tiñoso Marine Reserve, protected in July 2016, is the second in the waters of the Murcia Region, along with Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas, also in Cartagena. The regional government has initiated the procedures to protect the surroundings of Cabo Cope and Puntas de Calnegre (Águilas and Lorca) with the same administrative authority. The Spanish coasts currently have eleven marine reserves.
The environment of Cabo Tiñoso is a place of great importance for the protection and regeneration of fishing resources, in addition to having a high ecological value due to the presence of habitats such as underwater caves and posidonia meadows, and numerous and abundant species of fish of interest
