ARCHIVED - More than 8,600 new Covid cases in Spain across the weekend
Spain also recorded a "significant increase in deaths"
Image1: Military Emergencies Unit begins installation of a field hospital by the main hospital in Zaragoza, Aragón as cases continue rising in the region
On Monday the national Ministry of Health reported the number of cases of coronavirus recorded within the last 24 hours as 1,486, but as normal the figure most quoted by the media is the 8,618 new infections recognized by the Health Ministry across the weekend, bringing the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 322,980.
There is always a disparity between the daily cases officially recorded by the Ministry and the daily cases published by the 17 regional health authorities, with a “catch-up” process which is confusing, as the Ministry will only include cases diagnosed within the last 24 hours within its official figures, so when for example, one region is unable to load its data into the system because of a technical fault, its figures will just “appear” in the overall total without having been included in the daily data, so although the official figures are reported, an increasing number of media now quote the day to day increase in the total figures as a more accurate reflection of the evolution of the virus.
There is no doubt that the numbers of cases are increasing; last weekend the figures were 968 new cases on Monday and a total of 8,532 cases across the weekend, and the weekend before that, on Monday 27th, the same figures were 900 and those at the weekend were 6,361.
Rising fatalities in Spain
Although the Ministry has been insisting since the case numbers started to rise again significantly that most of the cases are mild or asymptomatioc, there is now no ignoring the rising number of hospitalisations, and the sudden upward surge again in the fatalities rate.
In the last week there have been 750 hospitalizations, 45 admissions to intensive care and 65 deaths. Comparing the fatalities total published on Friday, 73 more deaths have been registered over the weekend, bringing the total number to 28,576.
The director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES), Fernando Simón, explained this "significant increase in deaths" during the daily press conference when presenting the figures, saying that more than half come from the Aragon region, where 38 of the 65 deaths have occurred.
This upturn in mortality is closely related to the coronavirus outbreaks that occurred a few days ago in several nursing homes in that region.
One of the most affected social and health centers in Aragon is the one located in the Teruel town of Burbáguena, where a dozen elderly people have already died as a result of the outbreak.
Simón stated that the entry of the virus into a nursing home is “fatal: its lethality multiplies after the age of 70.”
He maintains that the lethality of the coronavirus in Spain "has dropped a lot" in recent weeks due to the decrease in the average age of those infected.
Aragon continues to be the leader in the number of cases diagnosed in the last 24 hours (348), closely followed by the Basque Country (342), which, during the past week alone, has multiplied its cases by six. These are followed by Madrid (224), Navarra (146) and Andalusia (133). The rest of the communities, including Catalonia (76), are below 100.

Field hospital installed in Aragon to support hospital structure
At the request of the Government of Aragon, the Ministry of Defense has begun the deployment of an advanced triage and temporary hospitalization installation in the emergency parking area of the Hospital Clínico Universitario de Zaragoza to help cope with the increased numbers in the region.
A total of 30 soldiers will participate in the assembly of the 400 m² area, comprising 16 tents (modules) and two ablution containers (toilets, showers).
The facility includes patient reception and classification area, followed by a work area for the medical staff, where they will have a portable digital X-ray equipment and five emergency booths. In addition, a hospitalization area will be created, with 26 beds, toilets and showers, a waiting area for family members and full water processing and air conditioning systems.
675 active outbreaks
Since the end of the de-escalation, 950 outbreaks have been reported with almost 11,100 cases. Currently 675 are still active with more than 7,600 cases.
35.6% of the outbreaks, with around 3,150 cases, continue to be of “social origin”. 17.4% of the outbreaks, with almost 1,600 cases relate to the work environment.
A large number of cases continue to be concentrated in the fruit and vegetable sector, due to the social vulnerability of its workers (32 outbreaks and more than 600 cases).
