Click HereThe national holidays in Spain in December 6 and 8 have become the unofficial start of Christmas throughout the country in recent years, and in keeping with this the official “Belén” or nativity scene of the Town Hall of Águilas was opened in the Águilas Plaza mall on Tuesday December 6.
Mayoress Mari Carmen Moreno was among the members of the council attending the opening of the massive “Belén de San José” tableau, which was donated to the town by Antonio García and has once again been set up by the Paso Azul. It contains almost 800 figures, many of them with moving parts, and the setting includes instantly recognizable buildings and sights in the town such as the castle, the Molino de Sagrera windmill and the Torre de las Palomas.
The opening ceremony included the placing of the last figure, a “caganer”: this is a curious feature of Spanish nativity scenes, and certainly one not mentioned in the gospels: a man squatting on his haunches and emptying his bowels!
Members of the public are welcome to come and see the Belén every day of the week between 17.00 and 21.00 throughout the Christmas period (except on December 25, January 1 and January 6 when the mall is closed) – see if you can find the caganer!
