ARCHIVED - Murcia Covid cases at all-time high: Covid update December 30
Third day of record figures in the Region of Murcia as ICU beds fill to 68.9%
The Region of Murcia has entered its third day of record-breaking Covid figures, with over 3,000 new daily cases; something which has not been seen in the previous waves.
These alarming figures are translating into hospital pressure, with 68.9% of all ICU beds in the Region now occupied and, with two major celebrations still to go, New Year’s Eve and Three Kings day, the authorities are expecting the cases to continue rising in January.
Despite the advance of the sixth wave, mostly due to the highly contagious Omicron variant, some regional authorities in Spain have yet to announce any restrictions for New Year’s Eve and the measures in the Region of Murcia are nowhere near as strict as those imposed last year.
New cases
After the record for the highest number of cases was broken at the beginning of the week, the daily figure continues to reach new heights, with 3,366 cases in the past 24 hours. A third of these new cases (1,123) were reported in the municipality of Murcia, making the capital city one of the worst affected areas in the Region.
Cartagena reported almost 500 cases while the remaining municipalities all had 200 or fewer in the latest update.
Active cases
Active cases in the Region are edging up towards the 20,000 threshold, with 19,443 reported in Thursday’s update (December 30). This is an increase of more than 2,500 in just one day.
Hospitalisations
Although hospital admissions are similar to those of a year ago despite there being almost five times as many cases, there is no denying that health centres and hospitals in the Region are feeling the pressure. The elevated number of cases means that more and more residents are requesting PCR and antigen tests and causing backlogs in the health system; in the neighbouring province of Alicante there have even been reports of patients being refused PCR tests.
With 14 more admissions since the last update, there are now 368 Covid patients in the Region’s hospitals, of whom 80 are in intensive care. Meanwhile, there are also 19,075 patients in self-isolation after testing positive for the virus.
Fatalities
Daily Covid-related deaths is another figure which is on the rise; a few weeks ago the norm was for one or no fatalities to be reported each day, but now, there are consistently more than three deaths every 24 hours.
Thursday’s update reported a tragic eight deaths, five men and three women aged 63, 65, 71, 82, 82, 95, 95 and 96.
Incidence rate
Both the 14-day and 7-day cumulative incidence rates in Murcia are now in the quadruple figures and show no sign of slowing down. The incidence rate in the past two weeks stands at 1,665.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants; over 100 points higher than the national average. Meanwhile, the 7-day rate is currently 1,009.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Vaccines
Reinforcements from the army are going to be brought in to help the vaccination campaign in the Region of Murcia, which has recently been extended to over 5s. Booster jabs are also available for those aged 55 and over.
So far, 2,656,523 vaccines have been administered in the Region of Murcia, 13,899 in the past 24 hours. 95.81% of the eligible population has had at least one dose, while 84.44% have been double jabbed.
