ARCHIVED - Murcia government issues important coronavirus emergency shopping information
Supplies in supermarkets are returning to normal but safety protocols are of vital importance
After the widespread panic buying at the weekend when the coronavirus “lockdown” was decreed in the whole of Spain the situation in supermarkets is now beginning to stabilize in the Region of Murcia, with supplies of most goods running close to their normal levels as the “run” on foodstuffs starts to balance out.
But although the advice given out at the weekend to the effect that there is no need to panic buy has been borne out as supply chains are guaranteed, that does not mean that regular trips to the local store are back to normal – far from it, as a series of restrictions and safety measures are in place to protect both shoppers and supermarket staff:
- First, and most importantly, do NOT go shopping if you are coughing or have other symptoms compatible with Covid-19 infection. EVERY CONTACT INCREASES THE CHANCE OF YOU INFECTING SOMEBODY ELSE OR IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY INFECTED, YOU COULD CATCH THE VIRUS WHEN GOING OUT SHOPPING.
- Many supermarkets are posting security guards on the door to allow new customers in only when another leaves: this is in order for those inside to be able to keep their distance from each other and shop safely. Be patient.
- Similarly, some shops are requesting that customers wash their hands with disinfectant before entering and some are issuing gloves to shoppers entering the store. Dispose of the gloves as you leave the store. Do not touch your vehicle with the gloves. Wipe down anything you have touched with sanitiser as you put it into your vehicle.Throw away the cloth used afterwards.
- Time your visit to the supermarket sensibly: there is no need to arrive first thing in the morning, products will still be in stock later in the day. This is the best way to avoid crowds and queues.
- Only one person should be involved in a shopping trip, and he or she should be as quick as possible in order not to inconvenience other shoppers. Police have stated most clearly that a shopping trip should only be for URGENT basic necessities.
- This is NOT a chance to stop and chat with friends to catch up on the latest news and gossip: that can be done later, by telephone or other means. EVERY CONTACT DURING THE SHOPPING TRIP INCREASES THE RISK OF CONTAGION OR SPREADING THE VIRUS.
- Do NOT over-purchase products: leave some for those shopping after you! There are plenty of supplies in warehouses and shelves are regularly filled. Buy only what you need and don´t stockpile.
- Help others, especially the elderly and others at risk from Covid-19, by offering to include their shopping in your trip, BUT be careful how many people you are in contact with when leaving your home; remember you may be contagious yourself and not know it, you may become contagious when shopping, and you could transmit the virus to the very people you are trying to help, who are generally the most at risk in the first place.
- Use the protective gloves supplied while picking up fruit, vegetables and other products, leaving the gloves in the bins provided when you have finished with them.
- If you sneeze or cough, do so into your sleeve rather than your hands.
- The recommended minimum distance between customers is 1.5 metres at all times. If you have to wait to approach the next item on your list while another customer is choosing, do so patiently.
- Pay by debit or credit card rather than in cash and clean your hands with the solution provided after entering your PIN number.
- When you arrive home wash your hands thoroughly, preferably with disinfectant gel, and clean the items purchased before putting them away. Then clean any surfaces on which they have rested in the meantime.
- Avoid touching your face, mouth, nose and eyes throughout the process.
TRAVELLING TO THE SHOPS IN YOUR CAR: ONE PERSON ONLY
NB: On Wednesday lunchtime the situation has changed once again and the government has issued an amendment to the BOE. From now on, only ONE person will be permitted in a vehicle, and this is now THE LAW. Those failing to respect the legislation will be fined.
Police sources consulted by Murcia Today wish to make the following clear:
We are NOT unreasonable people. We are doing the job for which we are being paid and are taking our responsibilities very seriously. We take our orders directly from the Spanish Interior Minister and our orders are to maintain order, impose the lockdown and undertake the maximum precuations possible to protect the public and minimise the spread of coronavirus.
Only one person is allowed in a shop at any time; every contact increases the chance of the coronavirus spreading, so DO NOT ACCOMPANY YOUR PARTNER SHOPPING. Use your common sense. Respect other people and minimise the chances of contagion for yourself and for them. To use an English language phrase, we could say, shopping without your partner "won´t kill you". We could however say, that if you ignore the request, then it could well do exactly that. And now that the legislation has been changed, you will be fined.
We are currently requesting shoppers to purchase goods from the nearest available vendor without travelling. If you are unable to buy what you require locally then you will not be prevented from driving to the NEAREST supplier if your purchase is NECESSARY. It is quite reasonable that you may be stopped by an officer asking where you are going and what you are doing as our job is to enforce the lockdown. ONLY drive to a nearby town or village IF ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. THE CORONA SITUATION IS A WORLDWIDE PANDEMIC AND IS VERY SERIOUS. YOU MUST STAY AT HOME UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. YOU ARE NOT ON HOLIDAY. THIS IS A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION SO BE SENSIBLE, BE REASONABLE AND WE WILL BE THE SAME.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE MAJORITY OF FOREIGN RESIDENTS IN THE REGION ARE PENSIONERS AND ARE IN THE MOST AT RISK GROUP FROM CORONAVIRUS. WE WANT TO PROTECT YOU AND YOU NEED TO PROTECT YOURSELVES, SO PLEASE OBSERVE THE RECOMMENDATIONS AND RESTRICTIONS PUT IN PLACE TO DO THIS. WE ARE VERY BUSY, WE ARE UNDER PRESSURE AND WE HAVE OTHER PRIORITIES THAN ISSUING THE SAME INFORMATION TIME AND TIME AGAIN. YOU AHVE THE INFORMATION, PLEASE RESPECT THE LOCKDOWN.
SOME OF THESE RECOMMENDATIONS MAY SEEM OVER-CAUTIOUS, BUT THEY ARE NOT. Everyone in the Region of Murcia is frustrated with the lockdown at present but at the same time everyone can contribute in small ways like these to making sure that it lasts for as little time as possible.
Finally, remember that while shops apart from those selling food and other essential products are closed to the public, various are still operating home delivery services. In addition, any product you are unable to find is available online. Post Offices are open until mid-day for the collection of post and small parcels.
THERE IS NO NEED TO PANIC. Neither food nor any other products is rationed in the current emergency, and a combination of patience and the sensible precautions outlined above will make it possible for you to get through the confinement without going short!

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
