Region of Murcia reports almost 7,000 positive cases in the past 24 hours
Number of confirmed Covid cases in the Region of Murcia since March 2020
With over 6,000 daily Covid cases for the third consecutive day, the 14-day incidence rate in the Region of Murcia has now rocketed up to 4,711.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Despite the incredibly high incidence rate, Murcia is not the worst affected region in Spain, with autonomous communities such as Aragón, Navarra and the Basque country reporting over 6,000 cases per 100,000 residents.
The latest Covid update published on January 13 reports 6,976 cases in the past day, bringing the total number of positive diagnoses since the start of the pandemic to 236,783.
Active cases
Another all-time-high has been reached in the Region as active cases jump to 37,692. The majority of these cases (37,169) have not required hospitalisation and those infected are in self-isolation at home.
Hospitalisations
Hospital admissions have risen from 488 to 523 in the past 24 hours while the number of Covid patients in ICUs has increased by three: from 90 to 93. According to the Ministry of Health in Murcia, the ICU patients are aged between 15 and 92 years old, and 70% of them are unvaccinated.
Recoveries
A total of 2,174 patients were given the all-clear from the virus on Wednesday – 195,031 recoveries since the start of the pandemic.
Fatalities
Four further fatalities were reported in the latest update, with the victims aged 68, 81, 83 and 88. The total number of Covid-related deaths in Murcia now stands at 1,886.
Incidence rates
After growing by 60% in the past week, the cumulative incidence rate in the past 14 days increased to 4,711.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the 7-day rate is also on the rise; from 2,140.1 to 2,465.8 since the previous update.
Those in their 20s continue to have the highest infection rate with 7,036.4 cases per 100,000 residents aged between 20 and 29.
