Health authorities in Murcia have confirmed eight new measles cases linked to the outbreak first detected in Alcantarilla, bringing the total number of confirmed infections connected to the cluster to twelve.
The Regional Ministry of Health said all of the new cases are linked to the original outbreak. Regional Health Minister Juan José Pedreño said the Epidemiology Service has traced and monitored the contacts of confirmed patients, helping to limit the spread of the virus.
Health officials continue to stress that vaccination remains the main protection against measles and is key to preventing further outbreaks.
The outbreak was first detected after several locally transmitted cases were confirmed in Alcantarilla, including two adults and an unvaccinated 11-month-old baby. A fourth linked case was later confirmed as health authorities continued trying to identify the source of the outbreak.
Measles cases have been increasing across Spain and the European Union in recent years, despite high vaccination rates in regions such as Murcia. Health experts warn that measles remains one of the most contagious viral diseases, meaning even small drops in vaccination coverage can lead to outbreaks.
Authorities are continuing to advise anyone unvaccinated or unsure of their vaccination status to contact their local health centre for advice and immunisation.
