ARCHIVED - Murcia unemployment rate drops by 7.29 per cent in September
ARCHIVED ARTICLE The Region of Murcia registered the third highest drop in unemployment figures in Spain
The economic recovery continues in
Murcia as the region has reported a lower unemployment rate for the seventh consecutive month, along with 13 other Spanish regions.
Data from the Ministry of Employment and Social Economy reveals that there were 7,355 fewer unemployed people in Murcia at the end of September, leaving the total figure at 93,507 people; which is even lower that the unemployment levels registered in September 2019, before the coronavirus crisis hit.
This reduction translates to a 7.29% drop since August, which is five points higher than the national average (2.28%) and the third highest in Spain, surpassed only by the Canary Islands (8.84%), La Rioja (8.78%) and the overseas enclave of Ceuta (8.40%).
In year-on-year terms, unemployment has fallen by almost 21% compared to last September and unemployment fell in all economic sectors, although the most notable decrease was in the service sector with 3,844 fewer unemployed people (-5.88%).
In addition, the figures also point to a drop in the number of young people who are out of a job as 1,213 youngsters got their first job last September. Both the agricultural and construction sectors registered similar decreases of over 10%, while in the industrial sector, unemployment fell by 864 people (-5.64%).
Male unemployment stood at 36,758 people (-3,458 compared to the previous month), while female unemployment reached a total of 56,749 people (-3,897).
Another positive statistic was the number of contracts, which rose by almost a third in September to 18,844 new contracts (32.41% increase) and, year-on-year, recruitment grew by 10% in the Region of Murcia (6,997 more contracts).
As for the unemployment registered among foreigners in Murcia in September, the figure stood at 11,085 people (8,717 immigrants from outside the EU and 2,368 from EU countries), a 18.50% decrease compared to August. In interannual terms, unemployment in this sector of the population fell by 6,128 people (-35.6%).
Although September is historically a month in which the unemployment rate rises, due mostly to the end of temporary summer contracts, this year Spain has registered its ninth largest monthly drop in unemployment since records began.
On a national level the number of unemployed people registered with the public employment services fell by 76,113 in September (-2.3%), making this month the seventh in a row to register a decrease in the unemployment rate, something which has not happened in Spain since 2000.
The new data means that the total number of people without employment was 3,257,802 at the end of last month, the lowest figure since February 2020 (3.24 million).
By sector, unemployment has fallen in the service sector, with 39,312 fewer unemployed (-1.7%), followed by agriculture (-13,067 unemployed, -8.1%); construction (-12,309 unemployed, -4.5%); industry (-6,668 unemployed, -2.4%). The number of people without previous employment who registered as unemployed in September also fell by 1.7%.
By region, the only four autonomous communities to register increases were
Andalucía (+4,416), Asturias (+2,539), Cantabria (+847), and the Balearic Islands (+687), while all other regions registered decreases.
