Murcia: the Mediterranean jewel that must be visited, according to The Telegraph

The capital of the Region has been highlighted by the British paper as one of the top Spanish cities to visit
The Region of Murcia is no stranger to international praise: earlier this year, ‘The Guardian’ included its Calblanque beaches in the top picks in all of Europe.
The stunning coastlines and plethora of protected natural spaces have always singled the community out but this time it is the turn of the Region’s capital city to bask in the glory, since ‘The Telegraph’ has highlighted Murcia as “a Mediterranean jewel” and one of the best cities in the country.
Murcia has entered the UK newspaper’s list of Spain’s 12 top cities to visit this year, and is joined in the honour by Salamanca, León, A Coruña, Oviedo, Zaragoza, Logroño, Girona, Mérida, Jaén, Alicante and Jerez de la Frontera. The competition was stiff, and the podium finishers had to score highly in areas like traditional cuisine and heritage, all the while not being completely flooded with tourists.
The regional capital was hailed as “a dream for vegetarians” thanks to the rich surrounding countryside and its celebration of home-grown, time-honoured dishes, like the famous zarangollo (scrambled eggs with veggies), olla gitana (“gypsy pot”, a chickpea stew with pumpkin and pear) and its star dessert, the paparajote, which is a kind of deep-fried lemon dough, usually sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar.
"The perfect paparajotes can be found in the Rincón de Pepe restaurant," according to 'The Telegraph'.
The paper suggested that anyone visiting Murcia must begin at “the imposing Cathedral” before making their way to the Plaza de las Flores, “where on summer nights Murcianos congregate to take in the cool night air, a wine and tapas.”
Another must-see is the Salzillo Museum to admire the Baroque Nativity Scene by the sculptor Francisco Salzillo; there are limitless spectacular attractions showing just why “Murcia wins friends easily.”
The publication goes on to say that a trip to Murcia would not be complete without stepping just off its doorstep and visiting its beaches, adding that the much loved Mar Menor has become “the favourite excursion” of many, while tourists should seek out the secluded coves of Calblanque in Cartagena, which have "dunes, dark cliffs and waters the colour of lapis lazuli”.
