ARCHIVED - Murcian regional Government denies lockdown rumours
The regional premier was visiting Totana after 3 weeks of localised mobility restrictions
This week the number of Covid cases in Murcia reached a record high and on Thursday the region recorded its highest ever daily total of new cases, but the regional premier insists that there are no intentions to impose blanket restrictions and return to a total lockdown scenario.“What we can´t do is return to a total confinement situation, we must not, “ he said.
“That is the best guarantee for avoiding outbreaks, we have to avoid it and this depends on each one of us playing our part, “ he stated.
Since the end of the national state of emergency, control of local situations has been handed back to the regional Governments of Spain to manage at a local level, the logic being that each regional government is better placed to understand their own local situations and the system is working well, with each local authority co-ordinating with the national Ministry for Health and collaborating, but essentially responding to their own local situations.
Regions are following the initiatives of others, and learning from each other.
Our own regional government is a lot better prepared, has become a lot quicker at contact tracing, is implementing more rigid systems to control local outbreaks by working with local councils and social services to ensure that those who are told to quarantine do so, that their movements are monitored by local police, that social services are in touch co-ordinating shopping to help anyone quarantining and that the public is well-informed about the potential risks to their health in specific areas.
The regional president has made no secret of his stance that should it be necessary to take harsher measures and close down specific businesses, lock down a building or confine a single municipality, then this will be done. Indeed, movement restrictions were imposed in Totana and then lifted when deemed safe to do so; this week a chicken roasting shop was closed down as a covid positive employee had continued to work in the shop, and in Mazarrón the system of intensive testing, isolating specific buildings with the help of the local police and supporting the residents via social services has proven so effective that it is now being adopted in other municipalities such as Murcia City , which is following the same model to try and prevent the confinement of local districts by intensive testing in specific districts.
As more is being understood about the virus, it’s been highlighted that the domestic environment is actually where the majority of cases are transmitted; although the source of the contagion may be external, the volume of transmissions is higher when a family are contained together as once one person becomes contagious, the virus spreads to all, so locking people in together actually causes domestic transmission.
During the last week completely irresponsible headlines and claims have been published by a Costa del Sol printed newspaper, which has never had much interest in the internet but has suddenly started to “panic publish” and uses sensationalist headlines in order to get traffic onto its webpage. This paper claimed that Spain was on the verge of a second lockdown, a claim which has been dismissed by the national government.
When questioned about the claims, Spain’s Director of the Co-ordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, said during the daily press conference in which the national Spanish figures are presented ”"In no forum or meeting in which I have participated has the subject even been mentioned, there are many hoaxes that run, I do not know with what intention; if at some point this has to be raised relating to the evolution of the epidemic, then obviously it will be raised and the decisions made that have to be made, "he said.
Whilst in Totana the regional premier and Mayor discussed how the recent confinement had affected the municipality, and the Mayor reiterated the need for financial aid for the municipality, particularly relating to the hospitality sector.
