ARCHIVED - New record broken with over 7,600 new cases in 24 hours: Murcia Covid update January 12
Murcia Covid indicators still on the rise, including fatalities and hospitalisations

The curve of the sixth wave in the Region of Murcia is showing no sign of decreasing, or even plateauing, as yet another record was broken on January 11 with over 7,600 cases in just 24 hours.
Despite hopes that the Omicron variant could be releasing its grip on Spain, the current wave has not yet peaked and experts are now debating changing the approach to coronavirus and treating the virus as an endemic rather than a pandemic.
As the virus continues to infect more and more people in Murcia, other Covid indicators, such as hospitalisations and fatalities, are also rising, causing increasing pressure for the healthcare system, especially local health centres.
In an effort to safeguard the Region’s most vulnerable, the authorities have suspended all care home visits for the next two weeks and, for the remainder of the population, the current measures are expected to be extended until February 4.
New cases
After Monday’s figure for new infections surpassed all previous daily figures with 6,612 cases, Tuesday’s daily cases broke the record once again, with 7,636 cases marking the highest number of new diagnosis in one day since the start of the pandemic.
Active cases and hospitalisations
The number of Murcianos with coronavirus is now 32,894, of whom 32,406 are in self-isolation at home. However, 488 Covid-positive patients are in a more serious condition and have required hospitalisation, with 90 people currently in the Region’s intensive care units with the virus.
Fatalities
Seven more deaths were reported in the latest update on January 12, bringing the death toll to 1,882. The recent Covid victims were aged between 65 and 94, highlighting the vulnerability of this age group, whose incidence rate is the lowest in the Region by far (1,339.7 compared to the average of 3,687.9).
Vaccines
Vaccine uptake has not been as high as the authorities have hoped in recent months, especially when it comes to the booster jab. Recent data from the Ministry of Health show that only 28.3% of 50- to 59-year-olds have showed up for their third dose (figure from Friday January 7), placing Murcia as the second lowest autonomous community in Spain when it comes to top-up jabs.
In the municipality of Cartagena, those aged between 20 and 35 have the lowest vaccination rate and regional data show a similar pattern amongst younger members of the population. Health authorities continue to urge residents to get their jab as soon as possible using the easy online booking system.
Incidence rate
The 7-day and 14-day cumulative incidence rates are two other Covid indicators which are still on the rise in the Region. In the past 24 hours, the 7-day rate has grown from 2,140.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 2,292.7 while the 14-day rate has risen by around 40 points to 3,687.9 cases.
People in their 20s have the highest rate in Murcia, with their 14-day incidence standing at 5,536.8; almost 2,000 points higher than the regional average.
