ARCHIVED - New Stealth Omicron keeps Spain at very high risk level: Spain Covid update January 28
Hospitalisations in Spain have fallen below the high risk level to 14.85%
No sooner has the Ministry of Health in Spain breathed a sigh of relief that the incidence rate has dropped for a fourth consecutive day than Covid experts appear to have yet another new strain to worry about. Nicknamed the ‘Stealth Omicron’ variant by scientists and officially called the BA.2 sublineage, five cases of this subvariant have already been discovered in Spain – in Madrid, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.
The health authorities in Spain are treating the new strain with caution for the moment, as it appears to behave exactly like the original Omicron and has already spread to around 40 countries, including Denmark, the UK and India, which is why the World Health Organisation (WHO) has requested that its evolution be monitored.
Cumulative incidence rate
For the fourth day running the 14-day incidence rate has dropped on Thursday January 27, now standing 3,139.45 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This is a decrease of 55 points in the last 24 hours and is one of the strongest indicators that the sixth wave of the pandemic is receding. This figure has fallen in 15 autonomous communities in the past 24 hours.
Even with this improvement, Spain is still firmly in the very high risk category. The communities where transmission is highest are the north African enclave of Ceuta, with 5,299 cases per 100,000, Catalonia with 5,287 and the Region of Murcia with 4,735, although the latter has experienced a huge 200 point drop in the last day alone.
Andalucía remains the community with the lowest rate overall (1,146), closely followed by Madrid and the Canary islands while the Valencian Community has seen a slight increase from Wednesday’s figures and now stands at 4,264 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The age group with the highest incidence rate is those aged 11 and under, at 5,782.
Coronavirus infections
The autonomous communities have notified the Ministry of Health of 130,888 new Covid cases on Thursday January 27, 50,483 of which were diagnosed in the last 24 hours. This is a slight decrease on the 52,034 coronavirus infections registered on the previous day and brings the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 9,660,208.
In the past two weeks, 1,487,633 cases of coronavirus have been diagnosed.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 18,548 patients admitted to hospital for Covid across Spain with 2,099 patients being treated in the ICU for more serious conditions. Both hospital and ICU pressure have decreased ever so slightly for the second consecutive day, although ICU occupancy remains worryingly high, at 22.16%.
The overall number of beds occupied by coronavirus patients in hospitals in Spain is 14.85% (down from 15.06% yesterday) which is just below the high risk level.
Spain’s Ministry of Health has registered a further 176 Covid-related fatalities on January 27, which brings the global death toll since the health crisis began in Spain to 92,767.
In the last seven days, 760 people have died.
Vaccination data
As of January 27, 38,275,164 people have now received both doses of the vaccination, which represents 90.7% of all those aged 12 and over. In addition, some 39,088,456 people (92.7%) have received their first jab.
Almost 20 million people have now received their booster vaccination.
