New street vending ordinance in Cartagena to help markets and food trucks

The Department of Commerce in Cartagena has launched the process to modify the ordinance regulating street or non-sedentary sales in the municipality. After eight years, they have decided they need to update the regulations as a way of improving the competitiveness and sustainability of street trading.

Among the new features of the modification is a more precise and straightforward regulation of charitable and occasional markets, especially in relation to sporting, cultural and festive events. These types of markets will have more precise regulations to guarantee their correct operation.

Moreover, a new aspect of the ordinance comes with the inclusion of food trucks. The new regulations will consider the spaces enabled for these food vehicles, as well as the hygiene-sanitary and safety requirements that they must meet.

The food truck sector has grown significantly in recent years, making it necessary to regulate it in order to integrate it into the municipality’s commercial offering.

The revision of the ordinance also seeks to streamline the administrative procedures for the granting of licences and authorizations, a process that currently generates delays and bureaucratic burdens for both merchants and the administration.

Furthermore, another part of the ordinance intends to address the improvement in the coexistence between street vendors and fixed shops , an issue that has generated conflicts at times. The modification will seek to promote a balance between both types of trade.

The council considers that the revision of the ordinance is not only necessary, but also timely, given that the socioeconomic panorama has changed in recent years.

Finally, the objectives of this modification is the promotion of greater integration between new economic activities and existing ones, seeking to ensure that street trading continues to be a driver of social cohesion and proximity.
