ARCHIVED - New Year’s Eve marks highest number of cases ever: Murcia Covid update December 31
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Almost 3,500 new cases in the Region of Murcia over the last 24 period
December 31 is the fourth consecutive day with record-breaking Covid figures in the Region of Murcia with 3,471 new cases confirmed in the past 24 hours. The upward spike in cases shows no sign of slowing down in the Region, nor in the rest of the world, with 1.35 million cases confirmed globally on December 29.
The only upside to the devastating number of cases is that the majority of Covid-positive patients are not requiring hospitalisation and admissions remain similar to those of December last year, despite having over five times the number of cases. However, local health centres are feeling the pressure as more and more people require PCR tests and other sectors are also being affected by Covid-positive workers needing time off to self-isolate.
New and active cases
The municipality of Murcia continues to top the leader board with 32% of the 3,471 new cases (1,134). Meanwhile, all other municipalities have fewer than 500 cases, including Cartagena. The new confirmed cases bring the total number of active cases to 19,443; almost four times the figure from two weeks ago on December 13 when there were just under 5,000 active cases in the Region.
Hospitalisations
The most recent data available regarding hospital admissions corresponds with Wednesday December 29, when there were 368 Covid patients in the Region’s hospitals, of whom 80 were in intensive care.
Fatalities
Tragically, there has recently been an upwards trend in daily Covid-related deaths, with four more fatalities in the past 24 hours: three women and one man aged between 63 and 82. This data brings the total death toll up to 1,830.
Incidence rate
The cumulative incidence rate in the Region of Murcia continues to increase alarmingly day by day and now stands at 1665.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the past 14 days and 1009.9 in the past seven days.
Some of the highest 14-day incidence rates in the Region can be found in Alcantarilla (2,002.6) Murcia (1,877.9) and Cartagena (1,764.4).
By age group, the 20-to29-year-olds have the highest incidence rate (2,517.3 cases per 100,000), while the over 65s have the lowest rate (546.7 per 100,000).
