ARCHIVED - No coronavirus cases in Murcia yet but the fallout is felt by Murcian businesses
Hotels report cancellations as conferences and meetings fall victim to the epdiemic
As the coronavirus continues to spread throughout Spain, Murcia continues to be one of just 3 among the 17 regions of the country in which no cases have yet been reported (the others being Galicia and Aragón, as well as the north African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla), although there have been numerous alerts and false alarms and the epidemic is causing a certain amount of “fallout” from the situation worldwide in terms of the cancellation or postponement of events, as well as worries over travel.
At least 50 people have undergone tests for Covid-19 in the Region of Murcia since alarm began to become widespread in Spain about a fortnight ago, all of the results proving negative, but on Sunday evening there was a scare at the “SUAP” emergencies unit of a medical centre in Alcantarilla, ( many of the larger health centres double up as a SUAP centre; these are outlying acident and emergency centres and relieve the pressure on hospital emergency departments) where an infant under the age of 2 was taken after presenting symptoms similar to those of the virus. The medical centre closed its doors temporarily while the premises were disinfected due to it having been established that the child had recently returned from northern Italy, although happily for all concerned the tests carried out soon proved negative. The centre has now re-opened.
This incident underlines the need for anyone who suspects they may have contracted the coronavirus to refrain from going immediately to hospitals or public medical centres: the recommended course of action is to call the 112 emergency services line, or the free number 900 121212, to report the situation and receive detailed instructions while awaiting the arrival of medical staff to assess the condition of the patient at home rather than in locations where contagion is a possibility.
A similar incident has also been reported in Águilas, where a patient went to A&E without any symptoms, purely on the grounds that he had recently been in Milan: at first sight this would seem to be an over-reaction on the part of the person concerned, but again highlights the need to keep calm and think logically rather than potentially placing the health of others at risk.
Reacting to the incident in Águilas, local councillor María Dolores García reports that the patient received a recommendation to stay in his home and that no risk has been identified for the medical staff who attended to him.
These messages echo those transmitted by Manuel Villegas, the minister for Health in the Murcia regional government, who on Monday tempered the relief of there still being no cases in Murcia with a reminder that all around the Costa Cálida the virus has been found in other provinces of Spain: for that reason he said, it has to be assumed that the first case in the Region could be identified “at any moment”.
Yesterday the net closed around Murcia when four cases were reported in the neighbouring Albacete province of Castilla la Mancha which borders the north of the region.
In Murcia as in the rest of Spain, the tourism sector is already reported to be suffering the consequences. Hotels in the main cities of the Region are reporting the cancellation of bookings as conferences, events and meetings are cancelled, among them a medical conference on the subject of respiratory conditions which was due to be held in the city of Murcia this week. The holding of another national conference next week at which paediatricians from all over Spain are expected could well also fall victim to the outbreak, indeed on Tuesday morning the SMS regional health authority confirmed that it would be banning its staff from taking part in any scientific gatherings, conferences or meetings of more than 20-25 people in order to minimise the risk of health professionals becoming infected, and with the hotel sector already suffering from the deterioration in the condition of the Mar Menor further losses are being caused by coachloads of visitors from other parts of the country abandoning their travel plans.
The hotel sector has already reported a rash of cancellations from groups, business meetings, participants in trade events and company events as well as some private trips.
With the celebrations of Semana Santa and Easter Week just around the corner there are logical fears that what traditionally marks the start of the busy season in the Costa Cálida could be something of a damp squib this year in terms of kick-starting the tourist industry.
It was also announced on Tuesday morning that the important Salón de Turismo travel fair in Paris had been cancelled and more countries announced their first cases; Morocco and Ukrania.
But it is not only tourism which is feeling the pinch. Bearing in mind that Italy is the second most important market for exports from the Region of Murcia (behind France) other sectors also stand to lose business, with sales to the Far East already seriously affected. The cancellation of international trade fairs all over the world is making it difficult to finalize export contracts which, in normal conditions, would be guaranteeing sales over the next few months, and producers of food and wine are anticipating serious consequences.
Last year export sales from Murcia to Italy fell by 15.3 per cent but still reached 1,153 million de euros, accounting for almost 11 per cent of all exports, and a further decrease seems likely after the cancellation of the annual furniture fairs in Milan, which was to be attended by four companies from the Region, and Valencia. An artisans’ fair in Florence which was to be held in May has also been cancelled, and in Japan the massive Foodex 2020 event has fallen victim to the spread of the virus.
At the same time, the Instituto de Fomento in Murcia has cancelled trade missions to Brussels, Malaysia and Singapore.
