Palacio Consistorial in Cartagena is also known as the Casa Consistorial Cartagena

The Casa Consistorial, or Palacio Consistorial, is the building which houses the Town Hall of Cartagena.

The modernist building was originally completed in 1907 by architect Tomás Rico, but suffered structural deficiencies, due to the fact that it was built upon land reclaimed from the sea. The area was subject to flooding until the port area was consolidated and ramblas and water control systems fortified.

Palacio Consistorial, Cartagena The process to fully refurbish the Palacio Consistorial began in 1995, and was a costly process, taking more than 7 years, under the architect Juan Antonio Molina.

The primary phases consisted of stabilising the structure, which necessitated raising all the surrounding floors and pouring concrete beneath the structure to re-enforce foundations which had been built on reclaimed land, land which was subject to flooding on more than one occasion ( see image). As work progressed, it became apparent that the building was in a worse condition than had originally been believed, and costs soared as the whole building was re-enforced before superficial works could even begin.

Today the Palacio Consistorial is the administrative home of the Council of Cartagena, although the main public offices are in a different building.

There are also 2 exhibition halls inside the Town hall, used for public visits , and this building is used for various public functions, concerts and protocol activities.The building can be visited by the public, with guided visits on offer. There is a small entry fee.

Visiting times for the Palacio Consistorial in Cartagena:
From Tuesday to Friday : Mornings 10am to 1.30pm and evenings 5pm to 7pm
Saturdays : Mornings 10am to 1.30pm and evening 5pm to 8pm
Sundays : Mornings from 10am to 1.30pm and closed in the evening.
Mondays: Closed

The bottom corner of the building facing towards the port is the location of the Tourist information point, where maps can be picked up and basic information found about Cartagnas tourist attractions.

The Palacio Consistorial is also opposite the RomanTheatre Museum, Cartagenas main tourist attraction.
