A 57-year-old man has admitted causing the dog's violent and unprovoked death in Andalucia
A family has suffered the incomprehensible loss of their pet dog after the animal was viciously stomped on and kicked to death in front of the 12-year-old daughter while out walking in Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz.
The National Police has arrested a 57-year-old man for alleged animal abuse causing the violent death of a dog on a public road.
The horrific incident happened just after 2pm on Saturday March 11. Several passersby called 091 National Police CIMACC to report that a man was kicking a dog in the street.
On arrival, officers found a 12-year-old girl and her mother in an "obvious state of distress and anxiety" next to the lifeless body of a dog. It was also clear the dog had suffered a violent attack.
After assisting the family, police collected their testimonies and those of numerous people who had witnessed the horrendous incident.
According to police sources, the young girl was walking the family dog with her parents' permission along Calle Bulería on the corner of Plaza del Cante Jondo in Jerez, an area where there is a children's playground and lots of people.
Minutes later, the detainee reportedly exited a doorway in the area, jumped the three steps separating the doorway from the pavement, and "stumbled slightly" on the deceased dog's leash.
The 12-year-old was holding the leash, and witnesses claimed he never actually fell to the ground at any point.
Shockingly, the man allegedly responded by kicking the dog in the stomach, leaving the animal lying on the ground, badly wounded.
Before the young girl or onlookers could do anything, "the individual continued the aggression, finishing off the animal by stomping hard on the head and neck area, causing the animal's death in that moment in front of the young girl in a state of shock," said the police in a statement.
The distraught young owner managed to pick up the dog in her arms and run seconds to her nearby home to her parents, but tragically, there was nothing that could be done to save the poor pooch.
The family contacted the police who were already in the area following the initial reports and began searching for the perpetrator.
He was located minutes later in a nearby street where he admitted kicking and stomping the dog to death.
The 57-year-old was arrested and found to have 17 previous convictions for animal mistreatment. His case will be heard in a Jerez court.
According to article 337 of the Penal Code, anyone who causes death "by mistreating an animal unjustifiably" faces up to 18 months in prison. They can also be banned from owning an animal or being involved in any trade or profession involving animals for up to four years.
