ARCHIVED - Rules relaxed:end-of-life care patients allowed final visit in homes for the elderly in Murcia
The strict coronavirus rules are relaxed slightly to allow one visit from a relative
It is an unfortunate fact that the effects of the coronavirus pandemic in Murcia and the rest of Spain have been particularly severe in homes for the elderly, where a very high proportion of the fatalities caused by Covid-19 have occurred, and this has resulted in extreme measures being implemented in order to prevent the further spread of the virus.
In many cases the restrictions on visiting in residences for the elderly have resulted in relatives having been unable to see their family members even when it is clear that their condition is critical, and in reality, many elderly Covid victims dying alone rather than surrounded by their loved ones as is normally the case.
This situation has caused untold distress for families in not only Spain but other countries as well, so in an effort to reduce the distress caused by these measures the health authorities in Murcia have now established protocols which make it permissible to visit in certain circumstances. Specifically, Manuel Villegas, the minister for Health in the regional government, announced on Tuesday that when residents in such homes are in an “advanced” state of illness – in other words, when they are receiving end-of-life care – one member of the family will be allowed to visit.
However, very strict conditions still apply to this slight relaxation of the isolation of residences. Firstly, it is specified that the patient’s death must be considered to be “imminent”, and that if the patient is in a fit condition to do so it is he or she who will decide which family member should visit. However, medical staff may veto that person if it is decided that they are for any reason especially vulnerable to potential infection with Covid-19.
The health authorities also realize that in many cases the visitor may require emotional or physical support, and for that reason may be accompanied to the entrance of the residence by another person, although in this case the rules regarding travelling together in cars must be obeyed (one in the front and one in the back) and the second person must wait outside the home wearing a facemask and protective gloves.
The person who enters the patient’s room will be informed beforehand of the hygienic and social distancing restrictions which are to be observed, and strict procedures have been established regarding the exchanging of clothes worn outside for the medical gowns to be worn while visiting.
The extent of the coronavirus in homes for the elderly
So far cases of Covid-19 infection have been detected at four homes for the elderly in the Region of Murcia, as well as at one centre for the disabled and one for minors. 53 of the 109 fatalities in Murcia have occurred at the four homes for the elderly and 248 residents have tested positive along with 82 members of staff – a significant proportion of the 1,520 cases confirmed in the Region until 14th April.
The extent to which health and medical professionals are “in the front line” in Spain is reflected by a total of 26,672 such workers having tested positive so far, representing approximately 1 in 7 of all cases confirmed, while in Murcia the equivalent figure taking into account only those working for the SMS public health service is 198.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
