ARCHIVED - Ryanair does not expect to fly during April and May
Passengers whose flights have been cancelled will be contacted
Michael O’Leary asks for patience as office staffing levels have been severely depleted
A statement issued on Tuesday 24th March by Michael O’Leary, the CEO of Ryanair, includes the acceptance that due to the coronavirus emergency which continues to spread throughout Europe “we do not expect to operate flights during the months of April and May at this time”, although he adds that “this will clearly depend upon Government advice, and we will in all cases comply with these instructions”.
In an open letter to all Ryanair group customers, Mr O’Leary begins by summarizing the “unprecedented restrictions on citizen movement” imposed by governments all over Europe which have “closed Europe’s skies to all but a tiny number of repatriation/rescue flights.” This will result in almost all Ryanair flights being grounded from 24th March onwards and the airline has offered its aircraft to all EU Governments for rescue flights and to operate essential flights for the movement of vital medicines, personal protective equipment, and if necessary, emergency food supplies.
Mr O’Leary goes on to guarantee that any passenger whose flight has been cancelled as a result of these government shutdowns will receive an email outlining their options over the next week or two, but explains that the airline’s office staffing levels have had to be reduced by 50 per cent for social distancing reasons and pleads for patience.
The Ryanair CEO ends his message by looking to the future, promising that “when Europe defeats this Covid-19 pandemic, we are ready to return to flying, to allow Europe’s citizens to go back to work, to visit friends/family, and to rebuild Europe’s tourism industry, upon which so many millions of jobs and families depend”, before urging customers to “take care of ourselves, our families and our communities”.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
