During this year’s fiestas in honour of San Clemente in Lorca, which are taking place from 15th to 24th November, there are various innovations being introduced to the formal procession of the patron of the city, and these were presented on Wednesday in the former Collegiate Church of San Patricio.
The first of the innovations is that 21 capes have been embroidered in silk and gold (continuing Lorca’s tradition for intricate needlework which is a key part of the annual Semana Santa parades) in a style which imitates a papal cavalry Order consisting of 20 people – San Clemente was the third Christian Pope, hence the honour. These cloaks will be worn by a guard of honour accompanying the figure of the saint on horseback, and on the shoulder each one bears the coat of arms of the Brotherhood of San Clemente.
In addition, an embroidered emblem or anagram has been created showing the coat of arms of San Clemente, the anchor of his martyrdom (he is said to have been tied to an anchor and thrown into the sea), two keys and a tiara.
These are welcome additions to the procession which will take place on Saturday 23rd November as the fiestas are endowed with a new dimension and linked to the spectacular heritage of the city’s embroidery: this is anticipated to increase their interest not only for locals in Lorca but also among visitors.
