Fernando Rubio

A few years ago, Fernando Rubio performed with his band Ferroblues, in Jazz San Javier. Since then, his musical progression has been impressive, judging from his most recent album, the excellent “Cheap Chinese Guitar”. Blues, country, rock, soul, all of American roots, yet this artist born in Cartagena makes this music his own with great authenticity.

The Waterboys

Forty years in the music business and several albums that today are considered classic records within the history of rock, such as “This is the sea” (1985), “Fisherman's blues” (1988) or “Room to roam” (1990), (and tracks such as The Whole of the Moon")The Waterboys, the band led by the charismatic Scottish musician Mike Scott, are an undeniable reference in the world of folk and rock & roll, and have been one of the key groups for the recovery of the popular taste for folk music with Irish roots. After their magnificent double album of 2017 “Out of all this blue”, The Waterboys open the XXII edition of Jazz San Javier with the presentation of their recent album in Spain, “Where the action is”, to be launched on May 24th, 2019.

Andrea Motis
Trumpeter, singer and saxophonist Andrea Motis is the most brilliant young talent in Catalan jazz and at the age of 20, has managed to record an album on the legendary Impulse label, in which essential jazz stars as John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie or Max Roach were recorded. This album, called "Emotional Dance", was recorded at the Carriage Howe studios in New York by Brian Bacchus (producer of Norah Jones and Gregory Porter) and Jay Newland (the winner of a Grammy Award for Best Album). Already a worldwide phenomenon of jazz, with frequent concerts in Europe, Japan and America, Andrea Motis debuts at Jazz San Javier accompanied by a fantastic band with her mentor Joan Chamorro on double bass and tenor sax, the great Esteve Pi on drums and the brilliant Ignasi Terraza at the piano.

Toni Zenet
We enjoyed the music and art of Toni Zenet in San Javier for the first time in the XIX edition of the festival, in a night that he shared with the fusion supergroup Spyro Gyra. He has just released a new album, “La Guapería”, essentially dedicated to the Cuban bolero, a magnificent album, and a good reason to invite him back to Jazz San Javier with the exceptional band that accompanies him, including Manuel Machado and Öve Larsson on trumpet and trombone, respectively, Pepe Rivero on piano, Raúl Márquez on violin and José Taboada's magic guitar.

His two albums, “Jaleo Holandés” (2015) and “Luz de Luna” (2017), praised by the critics, bring the fusion between jazz and flamenco to new heights, and serve as the basis for an astonishing live show, which will surprise nobody considering the career of David de Jacoba, an exceptional singer, member of the latest band of the great Paco de Lucía, and of Bernard Van Rossum himself, a magnificent jazz saxophonist and conductor. Let's enjoy this fantastic Big Band, composed of great jazz instrumentalists and their distinguished guests, joined by the flamenco guitar player Ricardo Moreno and the great Mexican dancer Karen Lugo.

Tony Desare Quartet

In the XVIII edition of Jazz San Javier, we presented Tony DeSare, jazz musician and crooner in the tradition of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. During the subsequent four years he has consolidated his position as one of the great revivalists, along with John Pizzarelli, Harry Connick Jr. and Peter Cincotti. In fact, John's father, Bucky Pizzarelli, performed frequently with him early in his career. It is a pleasure to receive again Tony DeSare and his quartet in Jazz San Javier, on this occasion with the special collaboration of the prestigious Spanish harmonica player Antonio Serrano.

His last album “Oriente”, the third in his career, and his collaborations as a singer and saxophonist with the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra of Arturo O'Farrill, in New York, are his last two milestones. Antonio Lizana will head upa sextet of brilliant musicians with an exceptional special guest: María del Mar Rodríguez, “La Mari”, singer of the group Chambao, one of the most admired artists in Spain.

CORY HENRY & THE FUNK APOSTLES

Thierry Lang and the David Linx project with Sylvain Beuf

Thierry Lang, the great jazz piano master from Switzerland, has visited Jazz San Javier on two occasions. On his first visit, his guest was the flugelhorn virtuoso Matthieu Michel; on the second the harmonica player Olivier Ker Ourio, and on this occasion he introduces us to an artist who has collaborated on numerous Thierry Lang albums: the prestigious Belgian jazz vocalist David Linx.

Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles

Organist, pianist and singer, Cory Henry is a native of Brooklyn, New York, where he started playing the Hammond B3 and the piano at the age of two, and who at the age of six offered a concert at the Apollo Theater. He began touring in 2006 with great figures such as Bruce Springsteen, Michael McDonald, Kenny Garrett and The Roots and recorded two albums as main artist, which were highly valued by critics and fans of Jazz and Gospel, his two great influences. After his work as a member of the supergroup Snarky Puppy, in April 2018 he recorded his first single with his new band The Funk Apostles, and a few months later the album “Art of Love”. A group as complete as this one had not appeared for years, with fantastic voices, instrumentalists with hypnotic solos, a kind of Sly & The Family Stone of the 21st century. A great concert of soul, funk & gospel to delight the fans of Jazz San Javier, who will appreciate it for what it's worth.

Jazzmeia Horn

Legendary vocalist Jon Hendricks has said of her, “Jazzmeia has one of the best voices I've heard in forty years.” Indeed it is so and this is why this fantastic singer and songwriter, born in Dallas, Texas, won “The Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition” in 2015 and has been compared to Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter and Nancy Wilson In 2017 she released her first album, “A Social Call”, on the Prestige label, one of the most prestigious in the history of jazz, a great album, which reached number one and earned her first Grammy Award nomination in 2018. We are really facing one of the greatest promises that have emerged in vocal jazz in the last decade, and we share the opinion of Larry Rosen when he states, “Jazzmeia Horn is the future of Jazz”.

Bill Evans and The Spy Killers

Since his first visit to the festival back in 2002, Bill Evans has festivalgoers many unforgettable nights. So we can consider him as one of the indisputable icons of Jazz San Javier, an inexhaustible and brilliant musician who continuously reinvents himself and always has something new to offer. What’s more, this exceptional saxophonist and composer has one more surprise for his fans this year: he is beginning to sing at his concerts, and he does it quite well. We want to listen to him and his new band The Spy Killers, with the spectacular German drummer Wolfgang Haffner, the virtuoso of the Hammond B3 Simon Oslender and the groove master of electric bass Gary Grainger; Jazz Fusion at the highest level with a great band led by one of the most admired saxophonists on the planet.

ARCHIVED - San Javier Jazz Festival 2019

In 2006, at the IX edition of Jazz San Javier, we enjoyed a concert by the legendary pianist Hank Jones with Roberta Gambarini and Roy Hargrove as special guests. After the death of the great trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who visited us that year and once again in the “Músicas del Alma” festival, Jazz San Javier wanted to invite again, for a tribute concert to Roy, Roberta Gambarini, a wonderful Italian jazz singer settled in the United States, of whom Hank Jones himself said that “she is the best jazz vocalist in fifty years.” Admired by jazz giants, Roberta has played with James Moody, Jimmy Heath, Herbie Hancock, Toots Thielemans, Dave Brubeck, among others, and often with Roy Hargrove. By her side is the prestigious Italian trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, a true virtuoso and great improviser, considered one of the best jazz trumpeters in Europe.

Marcus Miller

Considered one of the best bass players of all times, Marcus Miller, winner of two Grammy awards, has let us hear the characteristic sound of his electric bass in countless hits, such as “Just the two of us” by Bill Withers or “Never too much” by Luther Vandross, leaving his unmistakable mark in the careers of artists as admired as Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Bob James, Lalah Hathaway or Wayne Shorter. The years he spent in the Miles Davis band are also important in his career, with whom he recorded six albums, one of which is the acclaimed “Tutu”. The great Marcus Miller returns to Jazz San Javier, after passing through its eighth and tenth editions, presenting his magnificent new album, “Laid Black”, nominated for a Grammy Award as the best contemporary instrumental album, another great success of this superstar of the fusion between jazz, funk and soul.

Karen Souza

Argentinean singer Karen Souza is one of the freshest and most original artists we have heard in recent years. She has a surprising musical past in electronic music, chill house, deep house and roots in rock. Her first albums, “Essentials” and “Essentials II”, with fantastic jazz versions of songs by Radiohead, The Police, Lou Reed or Creedence Clearwater Revival, among others, revealed a vocalist with a magical ability to make come naturally diverse musical styles. Her two most recent albums, “Hotel Souza” and “Velvet Vault”, more focused on the jazz and with a romantic and luxury production, show us a great artist with a brilliant career ahead. It is a pleasure to welcome her for the first time in Jazz San Javier, accompanied by a group of first-rate jazz musicians.

Steve Gadd band

Living legend of the drums, Steve Gadd is one of the most admired drummers in the world. Chick Corea said of him: “all the drummers want to play like Gadd because he reaches perfection”. In addition to being the leader of his own band, he is one of the most coveted session drummers in the world and has immortalized his art in recordings for Simon and Garfunkel, Steely Dan, James Taylor, Joe Cocker, Grover Washington Jr., Chick Corea, Lee Ritenour, Frank Sinatra, Al Jarreau, Eric Clapton, Chet Baker, Michel Petrucciani, The Bee Gees, Michael McDonald and many others. It is an honor to receive in Jazz San Javier one of the best drummers in the history of Jazz, who has also just won the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, for his recent album “Steve Gadd Band”.

Elegant and inconspicuous, this fantastic musician has an innate elegance that fits perfectly with his instrument. With nearly a seven-decade career, he has played with most of the greats jazz names, Eric Dolphy, Don Ellis, Thelonious Monk, Cannonball Adderley and Sonny Rollins, to name just a few, and was part of the famous quintet of Miles Davis, along with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams.

For the second part of the concert, Mike Wheeler, star of the modern blues of Chicago, will offer us a good dose of Chicago electric blues accompanied by the great Catalan guitarist and singer settled in Canada Alex Zayas and the genius of the harmonica Antonio Serrano, together with Víctor Aneiros and his band.

Zoot Suiters

The spectacular swing band from Murcia, Zoot Suiters, composed of seven great musicians, integrating in its repertoire the great classics of swing and lindy hop of the 30s and 40s of the 20th century, as well as great current pop versions adapted to the swing. Two years ago, they offered an impressive party of joy, dancing and good music in the Barnuevo Esplanade of La Ribera. This summer, in the beautiful setting of Puerto Tomás Maestre in La Manga, we expect a success of the same level, with this fantastic group, which drags along with it a legion of swing lovers.

THURSDAY JULY 25TH
CHICK COREA AND THE SPANISH HEART BAND

Tickets 35 euros. Click here to buy tickets online.

Start time: 21.30

One of the most féted musicians, inside and outside the world of jazz, winner of over twenty Grammy awards, Chick Corea is one of the most brilliant pianists and composers in the history of jazz. Chick Corea was also the winner of the annual San Javier Jazz Award in 2018 when, with his Akoustic Band, he offered us a wonderful concert, that will make history among the best of the festival. We could not miss the opportunity to offer the fans of the festival the project presented this year, “My Spanish Heart” revisited. That album dated from 1976 was one of the most successful of his discography, and perhaps the one where we can best perceive his love for music with Spanish roots. A fantastic band accompanies the great maestro and he has invited two renowned Spanish jazz stars: Jorge Pardo at saxophones and flute and Niño Josele at the guitar.

Niels Lan Doky Trio

Michael Contat defines Niels Lan Doky as “one of the most convincing disciples of Bill Evans, with a very personal romantic sensibility”. His musical history is impressive, because at fifteen he had already worked with Thad Jones, and, in addition to his group The Doky Brothers with his brother Chris Mihn Doky, he has played with Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, John Scofield, Gino Vannelli, Pat Metheny, Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, Dave Sanborn, Randy Brecker, Ray Brown, Charlie Haden, John McLaughlin, Alvin Queen and other great musicians. With 37 albums recorded as a leader, filmmaker with two valuable documentaries directed by himself, "Between a smile and a tear" and "Dreaming with open eyes", Niels is one of the great talents of Danish jazz and a pride for all jazz devotees of the European Union. A great lover of Spanish music and of San Javier, where we have been able to enjoy his performances twice at the Jazz San Javier and once at the “Músicas del Alma” festival, it is an honor to welcome Niels Lan Doky, one of the best musicians of jazz from Europe, with his fantastic trio.

Maceo Parker

A living legend of funk and soul jazz, the saxophonist and singer Maceo Parker has been one of the most respected and beloved American musicians in Jazz San Javier since his first concert at the festival on July 28, 2001. He returned to the stage of Jazz San Javier in 2003 in the sixth edition and his return was also announced last year, but was thwarted by last minute inconveniences. There is, therefore, much desire to receive again in San Javier this funk and soul giant, who was an essential part of the James Brown band, and also of Parliament Funkadelic, the George Clinton group, before leading his own band, which today is unanimously considered “The best funk band on the planet.” A long awaited return of a legendary musician who is the living essence of funk.

“SAN JAVIER LOVES MICHEL LEGRAND”
WITH PIERRE BOUSSAGUET QUARTET & NATALIE DESSAY

One of the most beautiful nights in the history of Jazz San Javier was on July 30, 2017, at the closing of the XX edition, with the concert of the legendary endearing Michel Legrand, one of the most important European jazz musicians of all times, pianist, arranger, conductor and exceptional composer. Michel composed more than 200 soundtracks for film and television, was nominated on thirteen occasions to the Oscars, three of which he won, he won five Grammy awards, and numerous of his compositions have become jazz classics. He is, without a doubt, one of the giants of European Jazz. His recent passing has motivated this tribute concert, production of Jazz San Javier itself, with the musical direction of his loyal double bass player and friend Pierre Boussaguet, drummer Sebastian DeKrom, Patrice Peyrieras on piano and Sharman Plesner on violin. As special guest Natalie Dessay, the most important French soprano since Régine Crespin, and also a jazz and musical singer, who worked on many occasions with Michel Legrand, and who is one of the most prestigious and respected voices in France.

BUDDY WHITTINGTON & SANTIAGO CAMPILLO
HOMAGE TO TEXAS BLUES LEGENDS; GUESTS: MAURI SANCHIS & ÑACO GOÑI

In its XX edition, Jazz San Javier, in a production of its own, got together Buddy Whittington and Santiago Campillo, two bluesmen, one from each side of the Atlantic, united by the same passions; guitars and the blues.

Jazz San Javier brings them back together again with a new and exclusive repertoire for this XXII edition, whose main theme will be to honor the Texas Blues Legends, such as Freddie King, Albert King, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan and others, accompanied by Oneida James (bassist Joe Cocker) on bass and José Ciudad on drums. As special guests, two great Spanish musicians, the prestigious keyboardist Mauri Sanchis, admired virtuoso of the Hammond organ, and one of the best harmonica players of Spain, Ñaco Goñi.
