San Javier unveils eco-friendly oasis in Santiago de la Ribera

On Tuesday April 22, San Javier Mayor José Miguel Luengo officially inaugurated Santiago de la Ribera’s newest park, a vibrant 800 square metre public space near Calle Isla de Alborán and El Mirador Avenue.

Locals of all ages flocked to explore the area’s newest green corner, taking part in the community-focused events ‘In Your Park or in Mine’ and the monthly meet-up hosted by the Network of Senior Citizens’ Meeting Points. The day featured everything from family-friendly games to live performances, giving residents an early taste of what the new space has to offer.

According to the Mayor, Isla de Alborán park is a model for sustainable urban development. Built as part of the PIMA Climate Change Plan, the project is designed to combat urban heat, manage stormwater runoff and encourage healthier lifestyles. With solar-powered lighting, a fitness zone, a petanque court and more than 400 newly planted trees and shrubs, the park combines environmental innovation with recreation and wellbeing.

Mayor Luengo celebrated the park's debut as a step forward in climate-conscious urban planning.

“This park demonstrates the Town Council's commitment to actions that help minimise the effects of torrential rains, installing collectors in our streets and this type of drainage system so that the land can absorb the water and reuse it for irrigation,” he said.

The park’s green credentials include a sustainable drainage system, two rain gardens, ditches, an absorption well and new road drains, all designed to help manage rainfall and reduce the urban heat island effect. Visitors will also find goalposts, picnic tables, a shaded play area for children and bio-healthy exercise machines.

The project cost a total of €140,000, some €80,000 of which came from a state grant via the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Environment and Emergencies.

San Javier Tourist Offices The municipality of San Javier has three main offices giving tourist information to visitors, as well as two information points. The tourist offices are located in Santiago de la Ribera, on the ground floor of the town hall in San Javier and at the start of La Manga. There is also a summer tourist information point located on the seafront in Santiago de la Ribera as well as one at kilometre 12-13 of La Manga del Mar Menor next to Playa Mistral.

Due to its location on the fringes of the Mar Menor and Mediterranean, San Javier has a period of intense summer tourism activity during the peak summer months, although it is popular with retirees of all nationalities out of peak season.

Tickets for the annual San Javier Jazz Festival can be purchased at the Festival office in San Javier Town Hall, Plaza de España.
