Schedule of Processions
Semana Santa in the Mar Menor has a totally unique feel to those in other parts of the region, a celebration of faith with a distinctly marine air about it. This is the only Mar Menor Semana Santa, and is still a very young celebration in comparison to some of the others, the municipality itself being one of the youngest in the region.

The first Cofradías formed here in the early 1950´s and the number of participants continues to grow.

One of the most interesting events in this Semana Santa is the Vía Crucis, which follows the 14 stations of the cross alongside the Mar Menor, the figure of Cristo del Mar Menor carried by 40 bearers.

The most picturesque of the processions is that of the day of resurrection the second Sunday, and the best known that of the Santo Entierro of Viernes Santo, the biggest procession of the week.

Procession to commemorate the meeting of Jesus with the Virgen Mary.

9.30pm The four different pasos leave their respective churches , from Calle Concepción Escribano, Calle Mirón de Castro, Plaza de la Constitución, Parque Virgen del Carmen.

At 10pm, there´s what´s known as an Encuentro. This takes place at the crossroads of Avenida Emilio Castelar and Avenida de las Salinasand Calle cervantes. The four tronos meet at this point and acknowledge each other.

At 5 minutes past midnight, the Paso of Santísimo Cristo del Perdón leaves from the Iglesia San Pedro Apóstol. This is a procession of silence, commemorating the crucifixion of Christ.

During this procession the Coral Patnia of San Pedro del Pinatar perform en-route.

Sunday 8th April, Resurrection day
Procesion del Encuentro

The mood changes, light , white and flowers celebrate the resurrection and eternal life, a joyous occasion to witness. The capirotes are gone, and the participants unveil their faces, distributing thousands of sweets to the onlookers.

Part of this event involves an encuentro, which is the moment when Mary sees that Jesus has risen from the dead. This takes the form of the two pasos taking different routes and meeting each other , at the crossroads of Avenida Artero Guirao and Plaza Luis Molina, opposite the Town hall.

As the 2 pasos meet, cohetes are let off, the crowd cheer and white doves are let loose into the sky.
