ARCHIVED - San Pedro del Pinatar beach police unit scrapped due to lack of available officers
Officers are involved in an overtime dispute with the Town Hall of San Pedro del Pinatar
The beach patrol unit of San Pedro del Pinatar, which was launched in 2016 to keep watch over the Mar Menor and Mediterranean coastlines of the municipality, has been abandoned due to the lack of officers willing to offer their services while they await payment of outstanding overtime hours, according to police sources.
The Town Hall, on the other hand, attribute the decision not to the failure to pay overtime promptly but to the number of police officers on sick leave or holiday. But after council meetings have twice been interrupted by angry police officers demanding payment, it seems clear that the source of the ill feeling is the lack of compensation given for their overtime services.
When the beach patrol of San Pedro was created it consisted of eight officers whose main mission was be to keep watch over the beaches and seafronts in the municipality, thus reinforcing security for both residents and visitors during July and August. This was the first police unit of its kind in the Region of Murcia, and officers wore summer uniform from July until early September on the 12 kilometres of Mar Menor and Mediterranean beaches in San Pedro, using bicycles as their main means of transport during the ten hours of service they provided seven days a week.
While acting as a deterrent against petty theft and other offences they were also involved in moving illegal street vendors on, ensuring that dogs were not taken onto the sand, preventing camping on the beaches and acting as a source of information for members of the public. In doing so they collaborated closely with the lifeguards at the beaches of San Pedro.
Oficina de Turismo, San Pedro del Pinatar
The municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar has one principal tourist information office which is open throughout the year, and then other tourist information points which open during the peak summer months. Due to its location on the fringes of the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean coastline, San Pedro del Pinatar has a period of intense summer tourism activity during the peak summer months, although is popular with retirees of all nationalities out of peak season.
Much of the tourism activity is directed into these peak months, although the Salinas natural park and health tourism hotels in San Pedro del Pinatar make this a popular destination throughout the year.
