ARCHIVED ARTICLE Senderismo: Guided walking route Sierra de las Moreras y calas

On Saturday 18th January 2020 the municipality of Mazarrón offers a free guided walking route with commentary in SPANISH.
It is fairly common for someone on the route to speak enough English to assist non-Spanish speakers, although this routes is very visual.
All routes in Mazarrón have to be booked via the Tourist Office in the Puerto de Mazarrón and places are limited.Bookings normally open one week before the tour to prevent bookings being made and participants not turning up, and the tourist office splits the bookings to allow a percentage to be made online and the remaining places allocated to people who go into the tourist office to book.

Those participating in senderismo routes should make sure they wear suitable footwear, carry water, wear a hat and suncream and ensure they are physically capable of completing these walks, which are always graded. Walking batons are always a good idea as routes often cover uneven ground and the more difficult routes involve a lot of scrambling over rocks and climbing uphill.

The stretch of coastline which heads up towards Águilas from the Mazarrón municipality is wild and rocky, with some stunning secluded bays and beaches, as well as magnificent open countryside.
This route aims to show some of the flora and fauna which is abundant in this area, and the lava flows which jut out into the sea, running along the southern face of the Sierra de las Moreras, and reaching the coast via the La Paridera ravine and Cala Leño. The walk returns to Bolnuevo via the stunning wild coves of this stretch of coastline including Cala de la Grúa, Cala Amarilla and cala Cueva de Lobos.
In total the route covers around 8km and lasts 3-4 hours.
Participants should reach the start point at Bolnuevo using their own transport and participants will be advised of the meeting point once a booking has been confirmed.
